Pain from CPAP

Post by dreamsnthenight » Mon Oct 26, 2015 3:40 pm

The CPAP after a week of use has given me constant headaches and my face is painful when pressed on. It doesn't allow me to use my CPAP because of the pain, even with the pillow type. Is this very common and does anyone know what it is or how it can be helped. Thank You

CPAP should not cause any pain at all. It sounds like your mask is on way too tight.

What mask are you using, and where all does it hurt?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

You've given us absolutely no useful information to go on.
Please fill out your profile with the exact equipment and settings you're using.
How is it "painful"?
Is the mask too tight?
Is the pressure set too high?

No, it's not common, which indicates "something is not right" in your setup or use.

Is the neck strap too tight - it can cause major trouble, but there are work arounds for it.

Sorry to add to the list of questions, but are you using a humidifier and if so, at what setting? I used to not use a humidifier when traveling, but after a couple bouts of severe pain where every breath felt like razor blades were slicing inside my nose/sinuses, I found I always need a bit of humidity. Had to take a few days off when it happened to heal. When one says their face is painful when pressed on, my first thought is sinus infection. If you could in more detail describe your problems it could help readers better target our response and avoid you getting irrelevant info. Like mine may be.

Sorry, but I am new. I have a ResMed Auto and have a full face mask. I am not sure the settings, the dr set them for me. I first used it for 8 weeks and then my sinus started hurting and spread above and under my eyes and also temples. I also had constant headaches. My primary Dr. checked for sinus infection, but found nothing. He thought the pressure on the CPAP was too strong. My CPAP dr said no. I then had an operation for a deviated septum and could not use the CPAP for 6 months. During that time the pain and headaches went away. When I started to use the CPAP again, within 10 days the pain in my face and headaches were back. The mask is not too tight and I do not have an humidifier. My CPAP dr doesn't know enough to help me, so this may be a shot in the dark. This is probably not enough information, but I will try to answer any of the questions I can. Thank You

Does your machine say "Autoset" or "Auto Escape"? Hopefully, you have data, and we can help you get more ideal settings.

Why not?
Get one.
Sounds like you have "cpap rhinitis" google it.
I don't know how much moisture you may need but I bet you need some.
One of the symptoms is the sinus pressure (like a sinus infection) and the associated headache.
Other symptoms mimic a typical allergy attack or even the good old fashioned cold.

Thank you, I know I didn't give you enough information. I googled "cpap rhinitis" and they suggested a mouth mask. They said I was a mouth breather when I sleep, so it is worth a try. I have been fighting this for over 2 years. My primary dr. tried everything he news, but the two CPAP dr. were useless. I do have a humidifier now, I just have to be able to use it. I was kind of at a dead end, but now I have something, I hope it works. Thank you.
