Hole in septum

Post by BGovatos » Wed Oct 21, 2015 4:52 pm

After using a cpap for several months with the nasal cannula rather than the face mask, I developed a hole in my septum. I had to have a silicon insert placed, which was extremely painful. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm not the most experienced CPAP mask user but I have not seen a cannula mask that would be inserted into the nares. I am using a P-10 Pillow type mask that sits on the outside pressing against the rim of the nares. I have had the drying from a bad seal from using the wrong size pillow. Nothing like what you describe. I guess this is a reminder to all of us that a proper fit is important.

Cannula masks are fairly rare now that nasal pillows and cushion masks are so common;
and cannulae are mostly used for oxygen delivery without a mask.
Why were you using a cannula for cpap, when there are so many other options?
I can easily see how the septum could get damaged.
I can imagine how attorneys could be licking their chops over this.

Also, if using any nasal corticosteroid such as Flonase it increases the risk for perforation.

Some providers may assume cocaine use, vastly limiting your treatment options.
