Itchy nose

Post by Tropicpop » Sun Oct 18, 2015 9:42 am

I'm new the the forum... I've been on cpap since January 2015. A steady user of about 4 hours per night. I've used multiple masks. The full face works best for me. My nose itches constantly. I fail to see the benefit of the cpap if I'm pulling the mask away repeatedly throughout the night to rub my nose until the itch goes away. Seems like instead of apnea and snoring keeping me awake, my itching nose has now taken on that job. I'm determined to make this thing work, but I feel it's a poor solution at its best. A least for me. Any thoughts?

If the humidity in the room (local climate) is very dry, you might want to use a drop of lanolin before putting the mask on, or else use the humidifier on a low setting. For occasional itches I use a 5" long, very thin crochet hook from a yarn store - just slips under the cushion without disturbing anything, but you sound like you have a chronic problem.

You can look under my name for a very long discussion on itchy nose. I use benadryl and get about 3 - 4 hours of no itch. But right around 1 am the itch comes back. I am working on trying to fit into a full face mask with nose pillows so the nose is outside the mask instead of inside.

Good luck

Trim your nasal hairs, the wind blows them around and makes your nose itch.

What part of your nose is itching? It could very well be what squid said about the nose hairs. Also the hybrid mask that was brought up could be an option for you. It is hard to help without knowing a little more detail about it all.

If you have ever had a fracture/plaster cast, you may have been forced to deal with the itch that cannot be scratched.
Mental control gives you such POWER.
A friend of ours is quadriplegic, and only once can I recall her asking her hubby to scratch her nose.

If you have pets, check to make sure you don't have fur in your mask. I have a couple of very long haired cats, and even though I wash my mask right before bedtime I seem to often have a bit of fur float through the air and on to my mask as I put it back on my Bipap. I don't discover it until I put on the mask and my nose starts itching.

Scratch your nose vigorously right before you put on your mask. Sometimes that helps attenuate the nerves to eliminate the itch from airflow.

+1. Also, a good spritz of saline and a gentle blow help moisturize and get rid of any dried mucus (I believe the technical term is "boogers") that can also cause itching and irritation.
