Humidifiers and coolness of air

Post by acctingman » Thu Oct 15, 2015 2:54 pm

This might be an odd question.

I turn up my humidifier to reduce the dry mouth and it works sometimes, but I feel the air I'm breathing in is warm. I find myself wanting/needing cooler air to breath. I will, when I walk, take a deep breath of the cooler air and I usually fall back asleep.

My question is (since I'm semi new to CPAP therapy) is there a way to make the air coming in "cooler"? I set my humidifier to 0 and I don't notice much difference (other than more dry mouth).

Thank you

Exactly which machine model are you now using?
The humidifier in your profile points to a very old discontinued machine being used without many options for air temp.
Are you still using that old machine or did you by chance get a newer machine?

Odd, the picture for my humidifier doesn't look like the one on that picture. My CPAP machine is correct though, but my humidifier doesn't look like the one in my sig (i'll figure it out when I get home).

Is it a Respironics machine? Some of the machine links are broken (that's why no machine is showing up now) and you probably just chose the wrong humidifier.

When you get home get me the model number off the bottom of the blower. It's a 3 digit number with maybe DS, REF or P in front or behind it.
Once I know the model number I will know exactly which model you have and what to select in the menu.
If it has x60 (with last 2 digits being 60) you may have some options to help with the warm vs cooler air hose air temp and not have to sacrifice humidity to get it.

Then I can explain the options (if any) and maybe get you a little more comfortable.

You could try a passover humidifier.

REF 1056215
I think that is a humidifier number. Look for a 3 digit number on the blower..probably a little silver sticker on it and the sticker also has an 8 digit number which is year/month/day of manufacture.

The 450 model is the PR System One Pro CPAP...that machine has been discontinued so the link in the profile menu is broken. So just type this in the comments section of the equipment profile " PR S1 Pro CPAP #450"
The correct humidifier choice in the menu is "PR System One Heated Humidifier"

This is what we call a 50 series machine. If it had been a 60 series machine (model 460) there is a heated hose option that would allow you to set hose temp and humidity separately which means cooler air (depending on ambient room air temp) and not sacrifice humidity.

With the 50 series machine there is no heated hose option and we can't make a heated hose machine out of a 50 series machine. So unfortunately you don't really have any options for having cooler air in the hose without giving up humidity and even that may not be enough if most of the warmth you are feeling is the warmth from your own exhaled breath.

Bummer, I was hoping you had a 60 series machine because there is a little kit available to easily change it into a heated hose machine if it wasn't already and I could explain how a heated hose lets a person have cooler air which I know sounds weird but it works.

Because you start out with room air temp and can add as little or as much warmth as you want for comfort to that room air.
The hose air temp can be set independently from the humidity chosen.
I have use a heated hose for some time now. In the winter I like the warm air because I keep my bedroom really cold but in the summer I don't like the warm air so I set the hose air temp much, much lower but I never have to sacrifice the humidity that my nose needs.

You have to have a heated hose though. Otherwise the hose air temp is going to be tied to however warm the water chamber ends up being.

I haven't had a chance to read the manual for the Dream Station but I assume that they have pretty much stayed with how they did this with the 60 series.

They can't make the hose temp cooler than the ambient room temp but they can add minimal heat to that incoming ambient air.
I use about 80 to 86 degrees in the winter but in the summer I have it set in the 60s and it really doesn't warm up the air at all. So I have nice cool air in the summer and nice warm air in the winter.

If they stayed with the way they did the 60 series machines the humidity will be set in the clinical setup menu and the hose temp will be adjustable on the top of the machine.
The manuals are available at the apneaboard.com website. I just haven't had time to request one and read it.

Humidifiers and coolness of air

Post by JasonK94Z » Fri Oct 16, 2015 8:41 pm

Thanks Pugsy.

Both the heated hose and the humidity can be set individually from the settings menu. Only numbers such as 0-4 or maybe it is 5.
I have the heated hose on the machine, but it is set to zero, so no heat. I've been running humidity at 3. Any lower and my nasal passages get bloody and congested. I keep the room temp at 70 at night.
