ComfortCurve Mask -- Update

Post by OwlCreekObserver » Tue Jul 04, 2006 10:21 am

About a week ago I reported that I had started using the CC mask and was getting excellent results. After a week of use, I'm still pleased with it and still getting excellent numbers.

About the third night the mask produced a sort of buzzing or clicking sound and my numbers went up slightly for that night. When I took it apart for cleaning the next morning I discovered that I hadn't fully clicked the cushion back into place the previous day. That left a small gap at the back which accounted for the noise. I haven't had the problem since.

Someone else mentioned that they couldn't keep the cheek pads in place. That also happened to me that same night, but the next morning when I took it apart for washing, I noticed that I hadn't been careful to fully slip both pads completely over the ridges on the pad supports. Once again, I haven't had the problem since then. I haven't tried the (2 sets) of foam pads that came with the mask because I haven't had any issues with the silicone pads. If it ain't broke . . . .

By the way, there is an excellent video on taking the mask apart for cleaning at cpap.com.

It does occasionally lose the seal when I sleep on either side, but it only takes a second to reset it which I apparently have learned to do in my sleep, according to my bride. I had more leakage problems with the ComforFull 2 that I'd been using than with this one.

I have had zero problems with nasal irritation from the cushion or red marks from the cheek pads. It's far more comfortable to wear than the ComfortFull 2.

I'm not touting this as the "world's greatest" and I know that all of us have our own issues when it comes to mask fitting and effectiveness. That's clear from some of the comments I've read about this mask. But the more I use the ComfortCurve, the better I like it.

OCO,

Thanks for your post. I couldn't agree with you more. I LOVE my CC and wouldn't trade it for anything. I've had similar issues with the buzzing noise, so now I know what to do to fix it. I also have some small, but annoying leaks and have just graduated from the medium to the large nasal attachment. I discovered (duh!) that it's best to experiment during the day, rather than at night when you're exhausted and want nothing more than a good night's sleep. The only difference I can see is that I've been using the foam pads from the get-go. Having read your post, I'll try the silicone pads tonight instead and see what happens. Either way, it's been an excellent mask for me and I'm glad to know I'm in good company.

Best,

Kurtchan

Comfort Curve working for me too

Post by delphasue » Tue Jul 04, 2006 7:25 pm

Greetings!

I've been using the comfort curve for about 6 months. Aside from a little hissing sometimes (anyone know how to get rid of that? it seems to come and go if I wiggle the tubing) I really like the fit. Also, I have a skin condition called rosacea which causes red, bumpy skin and the regular masks would irritate that condition so that my face was constantly red. This irritation is completely gone with the comfort curve. I have use the silicon pads exclusively. The trickfor this mask seems to be positioning the pads correctly under the cheek bones. I also move the double strap that goes across the top of the head a little further back on my head to tighten the mask.

The most important thing for me is the fact that for the week prior to changing masks my AHI was 22.3. For the past week on the ComfortCurve it's been 4.8. Sorta hard to argue with those numbers.

In a perfect world I wouldn't have to mess with any of this hardware, but under the circumstances I guess I'd have to say I'm satisfied.

OCO,

Thanks again for the tips on how you're best managing the CC mask. I removed the foam pads and tried the silicone ones for the first time last night and must report great success. I slept very soundly and was able to roll over on my left side without causing leaks. My guess is that the silicone pads stay more firmly in place than the foam ones do.

Glad to hear/see that others are having similar success!

That's my guess also, though I haven't used the foam pads. I do know that the silicone pads grip pretty tightly if you try to adjust their position by sliding them. That could be why some complain about the pads coming off.

CC MASK

THE CC MASK IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER HAD. I HAVE TRIED ALL SIZES
& IT CONTINUES TO LEAK @ 13PSI THE ONLY WAY I CAN HOPE TO KEEP IT FROM LEAKING IS TO ADD MY OWN DEVICE STRAP ON THE NOSE PIECE ITSELF.

Just out of curiosity, since your nose rests on the nose piece, what sort of strap arrangement do you have?

Hi....newbie here.

I got my CC last Friday and have already made several modifications, BUT my nose is no longer red and sore from pillows! I am also dreaming more often. I had a Swift and could hardly wear it because it irritated my nose so badly.

For the CC, I used twist ties to tie the hoses to the straps so that I could route the hoses above my head. Having them on my chest bothered me. I also made some pads since the ones provided were not comfortable to me. I will probably use something (maybe pantyhose strips ) to stabilize the lower part of the mask since I am having some leakage. I don't know where Dakota placed the strap, but it looks as if it would be fairly easy to fit one from the elbows to the lower strap on the headgear.

I am really happy to have found this place. There is a wealth of information here..... and some very nice people it seems.

I TOOK A WIDE CHIN STRAP I HAD & CUT A SLIT IN IT TO FIT UP @ THE NOSE PIECE. I HAVE HIGH CHEEK BONES & THAT IS WHY I PROB HAVE PROBLEMS WITH FIT. IF THE ARMS MOVED AS WELL AS THE CHEEK PADS IT WOULD PORB ELIMINATE THIS PROB.

I PUT IT ON THE NOSE PIECE ITSELF & ROUTED IT DOUN AROUND THE BOTTOM OF MY NECK. THE PANT HOSE STRIP IS A GOOD IDEA. I WONDER HOW MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING LEAKS @ THE BOTTOM OF THE MASK. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE MANUFACTURER RE-DESIGN THE STRAP OR ADD A NEW PIECE TO TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM. DAKOTA

My sleep lab gave me a CC to try and I really like it. After reading all the posts about it, I didn't really have to mess with it too much to get a good seal. I have used it for two nights now.

The first night was pretty good - I moved around a lot but didn't have any leaks.

The second night, last night, it wasn't the leaks that woke me up, but the whistling from the hose. I'd get it to stop, then go back to sleep, then it would start again. That, along with a brand new air conditioner in my bedroom that doesn't seem to be working right made for a difficult night. But I still feel good today and I still like the CC, although, I need to find a way to make it stop whistling. Does anyone else have this problem?

Terri

P.S.: Dakota, are you in ND or SD or neither? I am in the Black Hills, SD.

OK. Stupid me. Obviously my brain is still recovering from sleep deprivation and O2 desat. I found the posts on the whistling and will try it tonight. It sounds like teflon tape or plastic wrap would work the best to stop the whistling, which seems to be caused by a design flaw. It's funny that it didn't do it on the first night.

I think the whisling also irritated my dogs. If I didn't stop it fast enough one of them was in my face making sure I was doing something about it!!
