How long did it take you to notice a difference?

Post by Ethanator » Thu Oct 01, 2015 2:53 pm

How long did it take you to notice a difference from using a PAP device? I have heard people say that the odds are astronomical for someone to feel an effect after the first night of use, but I have also heard people say that it is normal, or at least common for someone to feel an immediate effect. I saw a poll on this website about a week ago which suggested about half of PAP users experienced an effect after the first night and the other half were almost equally distributed along greater timespans, with a few polling that they have never had a positive effect. So.... what say you?

If you already saw the poll, why are you asking again? And, what difference does it make? It's different for everybody and if somebody who actually experienced immediate results, that doesn't help someone who hasn't gotten their therapy adequately tweaked yet......it'll probably only make them feel worse. It also depends on how much "sleep debt" they need to pay off. And, the word "immediate" can mean different things to different people.
And, someone who did experience some immediate benefit may have had just some smidgen of benefit and not a "fully restored" feeling. For lots of us, the noticeable benefits came gradually or in stages in relation to the restorative sleep we got and how soon we were able to get our therapy "dialed in".

To me, it's kind of juvenile to be saying something like: "Nanner, nanner......I felt better faster than you did.....SO THERE!"

We're here to help people with THEIR therapy. And, it's very individual for each of us. It's not a "contest".

You're right, I probably shouldn't have posted this as there are already other polls, I just tend to get obsessive over things and want all of the information possible. Also, I didn't expect people to be bragging about it not taking as long for them to feel better, I just wanted honest experiences.

I understand completely. It's a common "question" in our minds. We want to know how we're doing in comparison to the whole CPAP world and other users.
I didn't mean to be harsh, it's just that this question comes up in various ways VERY OFTEN.

In truth, the vast majority of CPAP users have no idea how their therapy is working.......they don't have or use software. They just dutifully (maybe) put on their masks at night and THINK they're doing OK.

Stick around the forum, use the software, be diligent about tweaking your therapy and you'll be way ahead of the vast majority of users who don't really care or know how they're doing.

Thanks for responding again. Is there a specific software that you could recommend personally? I have an AirSense AutoSet 10. I tried to get an app for it on my phone but it is so buggy and wont let me sign up for some reason. Maybe some software on my computer that I can use to connect to my CPAP via Bluetooth?

For the ResMed machines, the options are "ResScan" and "Sleepyhead" software. There's a link floating around here in one of the threads about where to download the ResScan (ResMed) software and several more links regarding the Sleepyhead (which is free and developed by some of the forum members)......."jedimark" being the principle developer.

Here's a link for the instructions on downloading ResScan.

Yep! Your machine will work with SleepyHead, an open-source free software that will allow you to monitor your therapy more closely. Check out this page for information.

Once you have the software, feel free to post your results to this forum and the kind people here can help you tweak your machine and comfort settings to make sure you're getting the best therapy.

Go figure - I can walk while chewing gum but apparently I can't quite grasp breathing while sleeping.

Also, just today there was a really cool post on how to use a wireless SD card to transmit your data to your computer. Otherwise, every time you want to view your data you'll have to eject the SD card from your CPAP machine and insert it into your computer to download the data (then, of course, insert it back into your machine before you go to bed).

I haven't tried it yet, but I ordered a wireless SD card today, looking forward to trying it out.
