Red irritated skin

Post by bri127 » Sat Sep 19, 2015 7:45 am

I love my cpap so much and thought I could just live with the minor red marks on my nose and cheeks from where my mask lays, but now I'm starting to feel self conscious and the red marks are becoming more dry and irritated. Any tips or advice for helping with this problem? I heard you can buy things but I have yet been able to find anything that works.

Two things to work on:

1. You may have the mask's headgear adjust too tightly. This mask is designed to "inflate" and "float" on your face. When properly adjusted, this will help prevent marks and discomfort and is also the best way to prevent leaks. Watch the manufacturer's videos on adjusting the mask - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... dgear.html

2. The hose should be managed properly. It should not pull on the mask, especially when you move in the bed. Pay careful attention to how the hose runs from the machine to the mask. Position the CPAP machine and the hose so it does not place tension on the mask.

Good luck!

Thank you for the links and tips. I am looking through and am not sure how I can afford any of these when they are 15-25 dollars and claim to only be good for a month. So frustrating! I will keep searching.

You can make your own mask liner out of an old Tshirt.
Look at the liners at padacheek.com to get an idea how it is done. Mainly lay the mask on the old Tshirt and cut an outline (give yourself maybe an inch or two which can always be trimmed down on the outside) and then cut a hold inside for your mouth opening.
Someone will come along and give better instructions for DIY your own mask liner if mine aren't clear enough.

If you find that a liner helps you can continue making your own or maybe try one of Karen's at Padacheek.com. Forum members report getting months and months and months out of her liners with common sense care. So one liner can last a long long time.

Padacheek liners help out a lot. Be sure to put lotion on your face. If someone asks me about the marks, I tell them I fell asleep on a hot BBQ grill. That'll shut them up!

There is a cheaper liner out there called RemZzzs, available from many DMEs and online from our forum sponsors: https://www.cpap.com. If you will google "cpap cotton mask liner" you can find a pattern to print out. then use an old t-shirt, or do what I did. I went to Goodwill and bought the larges t-shirt I could find and used that. I wash them in a mesh bag with my laundry, lay them out flat to dry, then iron them to help them retain their shape. I've used them over and over again.
