Sore throat from not using CPAP possible?

Post by rara200284 » Thu Sep 17, 2015 9:20 am

I've been using the CPAP for a month now. The nights I take off my mask for 3-4 hours while asleep, I wake up with a sore throat.

Is it possible to get a sore throat after using CPAP for some time because of the snoring and conditioning to having a CPAP keep the airway open?

Snoring can cause a sore throat. I use to have some killer sore throats and dry mouth from mouth breathing (which also can cause a sore throat) prior to cpap therapy. I don't get sore throats now because I don't snore like I used to snore and I don't mouth breath or gasp for air all night because my cpap is preventing the airway collapse.

Snoring can cause the sore throat and while annoying and maybe disrupting sleep...snoring itself not the end of the world BUT what is the bigger problem is that the snoring means the obstructive sleep apnea isn't being treated and that lack of therapy causes all sorts of damage that we don't readily see or feel.
Snoring is just an indicator of a more serious problem going on.

Don't sleep without your cpap....don't take it off in the middle of the night and sleep for the next 3 or 4 hours without it. That will fix the sore throat and make sure that you don't have all that hidden damage stuff going on without cpap therapy.

I find that I have a lot of sinus drainage if I am unable to use my cpap and this can cause a sore throat. Apparently, the air that is blown through my nose dries up my sinus passages, and this is a win, win situation for me.

I would think if you use a humidifier on your machine, it might help avoid sore throat due to dry air...or maybe there is something being filtered from the air that bothers you?

This happened to me last night, I woke up and found my mask laying right next to my head.
I wake up pretty quick if this happens, I have my machine to go auto-off if the mask is removed.
I woke up and my throat was EXTREMELY dry...I know this wasn't the machines fault because I've wore CPAP
all night before and woke up with a perfectly fine throat. Now even several minutes with it off will dry my throat
and cause me to wake up - And I only required a pressure of 6. Today I also have migraines to top it off - I've only
been on CPAP a month and man welcome to the world of reality and what sleep is supposed to be. CPAP is truely
incredible - I can't believe I've lived 3 years so terribly...and I'm only 29 years old...couldn't function at work due to poor sleep
and was taking over the counter sleep pills for years because I thought I was stressed from my business. Turns out...I have sleep apnea...

Keep wearing the CPAP and let your body heal! Finding the right humidity setting for you will take time and some minor tweaking but when
you find perfection stick with it and don't change it! Good luck!

Yes, many have been there.
NOT using cpap is usually the cause!

Sounds like you are using a nasal mask and mouthbreathing. If so it affects your treatment and data. Jim
