Frustrated Newbie

Post by Ryan D » Sat Sep 12, 2015 2:43 pm

Hi all. I started CPAP about a month ago with the nasal pillow type mask. At first at I was using the nasal pillows which were not comfortable and bothered my nose. I then switched to a full face mask the Air Fit F10. I found that leaked into my eye. I then went back to the nasal pillows which were going really well. Then my mouth started to leak all the time waking me up several times a night. I tried a chin strap which not solve the issue. I am not willing to tape my mouth. I have now gone back to a full mask being the Quattro Air. I find this mask takes up so much of my face and being a slide sleeper tends to still leak.

SHould I try a hybrid as I liked the nasal pillows?

Try and deal with the mouth breathing issue. Are you congested? I had to use nasal rinses to clean out my sinuses AND train my tongue to stay high and forward behind my top front teeth and it took a while. Now I have AHIs of 1-2 and very few large leaks. I sleep 8 hrs a night on my mask and nap for 30-60 mins every lunch time too. I am a big fan of the P10.

Thanks, no I am not congested. When I relax my lips separate and cause the leak. Its a very small leak but once I start leaking I wake up, fall back asleep and wake up again. The cycle continues until I give up. I need to get enough sleep to work so I only have so many hours I can fight through it.

Maybe a different bed pillow would help.
I can't use a "standard" fiberfill pillow with this therapy as I'm a dedicated side sleeper. My head sinks too far into it and pushes my mask out of alignment. And, they're too soft for me. Years before I started therapy, I started using a Chiroflow water-based pillow and it has worked well with this therapy. I can regulate the height of the pillow with the amount of water in it. And, my head doesn't sink so far into it that it pushes the mask out of alignment.
Some foam pillows work for some people, buckwheat pillows for others, and there have been a number of other pillows marketed for people who use this therapy.

My mask path was:
Simplus-FFM but leaked into my eyes and the contact with the bride of my nose caused feelings of congestion
P10-not a good choice for me as I have a problem breathing out into pressure
Amara View and here I stayed: minimal, FFM, no contact with the bridge of my nose. Takes a while to figure out how to put it on correctly.
Sleeping MUCH better now

By all means try one of the hybrids.
I suggest the Respcare Innomed hybrid because it includes all 3 sizes of cushions and 3 sizes of nasal pillows in one package.
You might also look at the latest from Respironics that is a hybrid type...called the Amara View and uses a little cradle cushion instead of pillows for the nasal interface.
It comes with free return insurance at cpap.com and they will even get you a prepaid shipping label if you end up wanting to return it...you have 30 days (from the day it gets shipped to you) to get it back to cpap.com and get all your money back if you don't like it.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... -mask.html free return ins
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/RespCa ... -Mask.html return ins is not free at $48.42 but still better than losing all the money if you end up hating it. Though it really is a nice little mask. I am not a full face mask person at all but I have tried the Innomed hybrid and I could use it if I had to.
