Chin straps are big. :0(

Post by SofaBear » Sat Sep 12, 2015 12:26 pm

My current mask leaks more than I'd like. I recently got the RemZzzs and they help some. Maybe a nasal mask would be good for me. I am overwhelmed by the options, and I know I'm in good company.

My mouth falls open and so I guess a chin strap it is.

I had not shopped around for chin straps until today. They all look so cumbersome, on top of the headgear to boot.

I suppose it is a matter of personal anatomy and preference, but still, can you recommend a good chin strap that's not as big as a house?

I can loan you some chins. I have more than a phone book.

Personally, I don't believe chin straps are worth the trouble, I'd invest in FF masks, if you cover the holes treatment works. Jim

Chin up strips, pull your lower lip up like a bulldog, or poli grip strips, cut in half and put between wet lips,
while leaving a quarter inch gap in the center. Messy wake up, but it works.
Once I woke up with goo in my ear, but only once.

Here's an alternative. Most people that have tried this minimal under-the-chin strap have made them by sewing something up and attaching velcro. Others have found suitable straps in bike shops. They do work on the F10 FFMs... I tried it out for quite a long time. The added advantage is that they also prevent 'mask-ride-up'.

Here's some more info:
I just found mine in the road as I was bicycling. I find various cuff straps about three times a year, so have a great stash for a rainy day! People just tend to have them too loose and they fall off.

You can find some various types in bike shops or on the internet but try to avoid any that are too stiff or are made of pure nylon. After all, you have to wear it all night so it should be soft and comfy. Laid out flat it should be at least 12 plus inches long. Mine seems to be a poly and cotton blend. I like mine and would even be willing go to a seamstress to get that exact type made once mine wears out. Ruby chinstraps are fine, as are all the rest, however this minimal type is pretty cool. I don't remember where I read about this solution but it was here on CPAPtalk. EDIT: I just remembered: some folks have cut up old headgear straps and made some under the chins straps with those segments. I tried a one once and it didn't quite pull up my chin enough.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Try a sweatband or ladies wide hair/head band that has good tension. Might just be enough to get the job done and it's a cheap experiment.
Back when I was trying various chin straps I got a cheap sweatband from Walmart sporting goods section. I think it was around $1. It really did a very decent job and wasn't uncomfortable at all (I have a small head).

The idea of chin straps are they are meant to be a gentle reminder to keep the mouth shut...they aren't suppose to be like vise grips tight.

You can clench your teeth together and still blow air out through your lips. If the problem is that you are opening your mouth to breathe, then maybe a chinstrap will help. But if you are blowing air out through your lips like I was, then taping can solve that problem. I use the 3M Micropore tape and it works very well and is comfortable and doesn't irritate my skin.

I have one, but could never get it to stop sliding down in front.
Otherwise, it was brilliant!
