Newbie question

Post by mobes119 » Thu Sep 10, 2015 8:12 am

I've only been using my CPAP for 2 weeks, but I am already concerned that the pressure setting that was prescribed is too low. In my sleep study, my AHI was >50. Oddly (to me), the pressure was set at only 9. I adjusted very nicely to using the CPAP- really no problem there, I'm using it 7 to 8 hours a night. My concern is that most nights, my Resmed Airsense 10 is telling me I'm still averaging 7 to 8 events per hour- so still mild sleep apnea. I'm also not yet seeing any appreciable results- still sleepy throughout the day, and great difficulty with concentration. My questions-

1. Is it to early to ask the doctor to prescribe more pressure? My gut is that amping the pressure to 11 or so would make a difference.

2. How long should it take to start feeling better? I've been feeling like crap for a very long time, so I am desperate for an improved quality of life.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi - first thing is... don't equate severity of diagnosis with amount of pressure needed to keep YOUR airway open - you could have a low number of events on testing but need high pressure to open your personal airway and vice versa... not related to how many events you have.

However, you might in fact need a higher setting anyway, but should first download SleepyHead and see what's what because other factors besides pressure are often involved - whether mouth leaking, back sleeping vs side, etc. etc. and then post results here so we can get an idea of how to advise you.

What is the event category breakdown of that 7 to 8 AHI?
You may or may not need more pressure depending on what the make up is of that AHI.
Exactly which machine are you using?
You are likely going to need to use the software to get the breakdown in an easy to see format so that past nights can also be evaluate.
Sleepyhead will work as well as ResScan. Sleepyhead has both Windows and Mac versions but ResScan is Windows only. Send me a private message if you want more information on ResScan.

Here's a tutorial that will give you an idea what is available in terms of data..also how to use ResScan which can be a bitch/slow.

Don't go changing pressures until you know exactly what you are dealing with. While the chances are you probably do need a bit more pressure there is still the possibility that those events in that AHI are central and more pressure won't fix them and could potentially make them worse. So let's not try to fix something until we know exactly what needs fixing.

When you have time please add your equipment to your profile like I have mine. It helps us help you better and faster when we don't have to ask.
Let's hope you don't have the AirSense 10 CPAP because it can't tell you the event category breakdown...all it shows is generic AHI.
More information on that once we know exactly which model.
Model name is clearly stated on the machine....choices are...CPAP, AutoSet, AutoSet for her...
