Broken CPAP hose - can I duct tape it as a stopgap?

Anyone know if I can use a standard hose with the Resmed S9? I was told it needs a non standard slimline hose, which seems to cost 3x a regular hose.
When I bought my S9, the DME told me that I could use a standard cpap hose with the S9, but not the slimline hose on straight Cpap machines. I had been using an S8 Elite at the time.
