Norton Internet Security Doesn't Like Rescan 5.4.1 Files??

Post by MarylandCPAPer » Fri Jul 10, 2015 6:56 pm

I just ran a full system virus scan in Norton Internet Security. Among the results were:

Unresolved Threats:
Risks in compressed file "Data1.cab"
Type: Compressed
Risk: High (High Stealth, High Removal, High Performance, High Privacy)
Categories: Heuristic Virus
Status: Not Attempted
-----------
2 Files
[setup_v1_10.exe] inside of [c:\users\[my computer's name}\documents\31302_resscan_5.4.1\sx156-2701\data1.cab] - Not Attempted
[devicescan2ps.dll] inside of [c:\users\[my computer's name}\documents\31302_resscan_5.4.1\sx156-2701\data1.cab] - Not Attempted

I downloaded the software about 2 weeks ago and never used it. Anyone have similar problems or know what Rescan _5.4.1 is?

I intend to delete the entire program. It appears Norton Internet Security couldn't fix the problem.

And I don't like Norton products, they are bloated and over controlling. When your computer fails, use Avast as anti virus, after a reformat, and a new O.S. install.

Norton can't be removed without a reformat, it's worse that a virus. Jim

NOTE: The Rescan file is something I downloaded from a link someone here sent me via PM to help me interpret results on my new A10 machine. It was in a zip file that would not open, thankfully!! I haven't downloaded anything from Res Med.

Norton Internet Security works just fine for me. I will stick with it. From what I see in online reviews, Avast only detects about 56% of security threats, while Norton detects a much higher %.

Resscan is the resmed app for reading data. Norton is your problem. Never let that program on any computer I setup.

Upon further review, I have found that the version of the file that Norton doesn't like came from a link someone PM'd me from this board, fully well intentioned, I'm sure. Perhaps a second-hand version of a program being passed around via PM MAY have corrupted files or other security problems?? Just a heads up to those who may also have been PM'd it.

Doubtful.

Follow-up, work in IT support for many years, Norton is not recommended.

+1

I read somewhere a while back that virus writers test their code against the big names, norton, mcafee, etc.

plus as noted, norton is one of the more bloated packages and makes your computer slower than others.

years ago, norton was a clever guy writing nifty utilities for people, then he got bought out and his name used... like "westinghouse" or "rca" appliances made in china by some holding company that bought the name.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it into a camel. I learned about Norton, in the old Commodore days...... sorry to save they have only gotten more invasive, never let a program near your computer that doesn't u install cleanly. Many programs have compressed data files, if I really want to run them I just grit my teeth and do it, what's another reformat, just 25 hours of my life, running 52 added programs. Used to have to reformat Win ME, every 3 months, now Win 7 has been running 3 years without reformat 24/7, thank you Avast and Tune Up Utilities. Jim

A family member was in change of the LANs for an international company and he sticks with Norton Internet Security. I have never had to reformat any of my computers, clear a virus from my computer, or re-install my OS in 25 years of using PCs. Norton has been good to me.

The Rescan zip file a trusted member here sent me did not unzip or install at all, so I agree with your advice about not using programs that do not install cleanly, goofproof.

I value my computers as much as my CPAP machines so am not installing junk on them. Thank you. Better safe than sorry! Stick with what works for you. I am not selling Norton software.

Perhaps it would be wise to virus check any file you find from an unofficial source online, particularly from someone who sends links via PM and doesn't allow PMs to be sent back to them to let them know their software links don't work, or worse.

BTW, I never got an answer to the question I asked on this forum to which the PM with the bad software link was sent in response. Sometimes, people here want serious answers to serious questions, not links to questionable computer software.

I have 5 computers running Windozes XP & 7, plus Chromebox, Android Kit-Kat 4.4.2, and installed today, Android Lollipop 5.0.1 all using Avast Free.

I do Torrents and video file archiving, over 20 TB, not GB,TB of USB 3.0 storage, 3/4 full. Basically it's the wild west, I'm running my computers in a minefield daily. What I meant to type was, Never install a program that doesn't uninstall correctly. Android auto corrected to U corrected and I missed it. Besides mess with the registry some leave trash hidden all over the drive, the main purpose is to prevent removal. If it works for you it must be good enough for your computer. Jim

Not good enough for mine.

Actually, according to you, you just did clear a virus from your computer.

But really, what ever floats your boat. Some people just plain get lucky regardless what they do or use.

With regards to the file you suspected...

The current version of ResScan from Resmed is 5.4.1. The filename is typically distributed as:

31302_ResScan_5.4.1.zip

The MD5 checksum of the file (tested) is

b0edfe99a6f637e6f24a82de3946fd31 *31302_ResScan_5.4.1.zip

Thank you for the link. Yes, I have cleared viruses from the computer before they did any harm, from files sent to me by others. thanks to antivirus software. Fortunately, the file sent via PM led to a program that would not open.

I appreciate the help that has been offered on this forum. Many people, including you, have been helpful to me in selecting, setting up and adjusting to CPAP in 2010 and to my latest CPAP machine. I have learned a lot here over the last five years.
