It's illegal. If you insist on buying a used machine:work a reputable medical supply dealer. You're more likely to get a clean, reliable, reconditioned unit. (Anyone who would buy a used mask is nuts.) Tuberculosis? other contagious diseases? Tuberculosis is not killed by standard cleaning wipes. Chlorine will kill it but who's going to run chlorine thru the machine. Despite what most people think, there are conditions when a person's breath (germs) could work it's way back into the internals of a machine. Are you qualified to tear down the machine and disinfect it? If you've done much business on Craig's list (I have), you'll know that fraud is rampant. (I'll buy a canoe from Craig's list but not a medical device).LSAT wrote:Too tall wrote:Yikes, this thread could get pretty disgusting. Ha. Tell me why!
I can afford a new one, it's just too risky, you don't know the environment it was used in.

the *fact* that the only germs in the blower are the ones that came in the room air, and that there's nothing in there for germs to grow on wouldn't interest you, I'm sure

when he was alive, he was a smart, rational man, he'd never "soak the thole thing in Clorox", because that would be *stupid*. we camped, we hunted, we processed deer into sausage... surely things that make an irrational germophobe want to crawl into their little bubble of antisepticness and hide.
and, again, as I said, not critically, but rationally... no reason, just BS.

Re: Bad Breath CPAP
there's a technical term for *all* of this... "FUD".Too tall wrote:It's illegal. If you insist on buying a used machine:work a reputable medical supply dealer. "despite what most people think" .... like, what? facts, not fud.
and, given that there's *nothing* in the machine for germs to eat, any germs that got in there would DIE in fairly short order.
and, as to masks, pretty much every mask has processing instructions on how to sanitize it between different users. if it wasn't *SAFE* then there would be no instructions to that effect.

Actually, regarding your Paw Paw, I was trying to pay (you and) your Paw Paw a complement. I was referring to the conversation you and I had on another thread in (see below) which I said your Paw Paw was a smart man. (because he liked clorox). I don't ever get personal on these forums like some people do. I was trying to have a light hearted conversation with you but I see that's not going to happen. Besides being illegal, I gave you my reasons. To each his/ her own. For me it would be like using someone else's toothbrush. If you feel comfortable using a Craig's list CPAP go for it.palerider wrote:my 'paw paw'... if you're talking about my grandfather, he's dead, and has been these many years, I'll thank you to have a little respect.Too tall wrote:Don't be so critical Paleride. I can see how you can feel like that about wearing a mask someone else used, even if it'd been sanitized, (typically heat sterilization is recommended, though chemical means can be used too)
however, the blower itself, which is on the other end of a 6' moving column of air, and, as I mentioned (having disassembled several different models) having nothing inside to allow germs to survive... really isn't an issue.
as to the legality, I don't care, I'm happy to save money buying a used machine, or a mask off ebay, or amazon, even though THAT isn't "legal" either. there's a lot of stuff these days that's not "legal" for various BS reasons.

There are no laws which make it illegal for an individual to sell his used CPAP equipment.Too tall wrote:It's illegal.

We're talking about buying not selling. There is a federal law that says it's illegal to buy without prescription. You won't find a DME that will sell you a cpap or mask without a prescription. Craig's list is the wild wild west and you can buy anything from sex to cpap without prescriptions Like Paleride, I could give a sh+t about legality, I won't do it for hygiene reason and I've got adequate insurance to cover most of the cost of a new one. As far as hygiene, that's your choice.

I could have gotten a used backup machine, but the difference between our hosts and secondwind was not a lot,
and I had the money. So why take the cheapest one when others have less money than I?
Besides, I like nice NEW things!

Do you think this is true or do you just make sloppy posts without thinking about your statements?Too tall wrote:There is a federal law that says it's illegal to buy without prescription.
There is no Federal or State law that say it's illegal to buy a CPAP without prescription.
There are both Federal and State laws that require a prescription before a business can sell a CPAP.
There are no Federal or State laws dealing with a private individual who happens to sell a CPAP machine. The laws all deal with businesses who sell CPAP machines.

But I do believe we should be careful about the information we post. There are casual and new readers without much knowledge who can get scared of certain things.
