OSA and excessive daytime sleepiness.

Post by Rhodes » Wed Jul 08, 2015 4:46 pm

At the end of last year I was diagnosed with OSA and I think the other is called hypersomnia? - EDS. I don't know how my Dr got the EDS? I was only given an at bedtime sleep study and an office evaluation with 1 specific questionnaire. On the questionnaire I explained that I never ever take naps at any time ever because I am just too ADHD and anxious, restless to do so, although I did tell him I was very tired simultaneously and that I typically sleep from 2 AM until 11 AM as that just happens to be my cycle. I said I couldn't fall asleep during the day if I was at the spa and I know when I'm wide awake. So my question becomes, can my nightime sleep study diagnose EDS? The reason I ask is because I saw him today and read my diagnosis off of the chart and learned new information that I'd like to get to the bottom of. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No, a sleep study cannot diagnose Excessive Daytime Somnolence (EDS) but it can be a really good indicator if it shows a high rate of apneic events. Your comment about your sleep schedule and sleeping from 2 AM to 11 AM probably pushed him in that direction. Unless you are on a odd work shift, your sleep hours are somewhat unusual.

Was the sleep test done at home or in a lab?

Thank you for your reply
My testing was done in a sleep lab and I have no idea why my cycle is so strange. It's just natural. I like to think at that time of night when no one can bother me and cannot let myself wind down at a normal time. I sleep 9 hours on average. I dont know why I require so much sleep? Waking up at 11 AM has screwed up my whole adult life. Actually, it messed up my teenage years too because I lived on so little sleep. Thanks again.

I wouldn't say you sleep at a weird or wrong time. I also have odd sleep times but I just say it is cause I live in the wrong time zone. I don't have real good answer for why the doctor put down EDS but I feel sometimes they add it to help justify to the insurance companies the need for the sleep study and for treatment so they will cover it.

Since the study was in a sleep lab (and even if it were not) you should get a copy of the report so you can see the results and, especially, the distribution of the types of apnea recorded. You can get a copy either from the doctor or directly from the lab. You might be asked to fill out a release form to get the copy but that is the routine these days.

Did they do a split study? If they came in the middle of the night and masked you up, that is part of a split study.
In that part you will be able to see the results of any pressures they tried.

Awesome advice. Thank you. I went back the following week for a study with a mask and they tried various pressures. I think I have APAP and my machine adjusts depending how I'm doing. I'm doing really well with an ahi of nearly 1.0 on sleepyhead, to what the Dr. said I originally had severe OSA. I am happy about this. I would just like to understand it all better.

So glad you are doing well. Getting severe OSA under control is a great outcome.
