Back pain

Post by Snorky » Wed Jul 08, 2015 11:44 am

I am relatively new to machine assisted sleep (Bi-PAP, month and a half). I am finally getting used to it. The big problem I have now is back pain in the morning. What can I do about it?

Are you trying to stay in one position all night, afraid to move the mask, or ??? You've given us nothing at all to go on, so it's kind of hard to help.

Yea, for the most part I stay in the same position b/c I have high pressures (21 on inhale and 17 on exhale) and it seems to come off when I turn to the side

The mask comes off? Have you looked into a Pap pillow (Papillow.com) available if you want on Cpap.com - it has cutouts for the mask if you side sleep. But you're still really not saying much for someone who wants help... what mask are you using?

I am using the Resmed Mirage FX nasal mask. I haven't tried the pillow b/c my respitory therapist doesn't believe it will work for me due to the high pressures my machine operates at.

There are people here using pillows at high settings... try PM'g Pugsy for instance - an expert on bilevel machines (and masks).

It probably has to do with sleeping on your back. You can try one of those incline pillows or a cpap pillow that will allow you to go more on your side. I can't sleep on my back at all or I have lots of lower back pain.

At those pressures keeping any mask sealed when moving around in bed is going to be a challenge but the smaller the surface area that needs sealing...the easier it is to get and keep a good seal.
If you want to try the nasal pillow mask...try it. Don't let anyone talk you out of it just because they think it "won't work at higher pressures" because it can and does work at higher pressures for a lot of people. Not just me. I see pressures over 20 (sometimes up to 23 cm) nearly every night and my nasal pillows actually stay in place remarkably well and I wear things REALLY loose.

I also move around A LOT every night...from one side to the other to on my back to back on my side again. I can't stay in one position very long due to old back and pelvis injury. If I don't move my back hurts real bad.

We have many forum members here who use a nasal pillow mask and use pressures well into the 20s. It can be done and isn't all that difficult.
