chin strap recommendation please

Post by hegel » Mon Jun 01, 2015 7:00 pm

Out of curiosity I tried a chin strap and found that I'm sleeping better. (I didn't think that I needed one). I use a wide elsasticy band that wraps around the top of my head and under my chin, with a strap that goes around the back of my head and fastens with velcro. It's a bit scratchy and I'm afraid that it might become hot in summer. Also, it may be affecting my ears (I try to not cover my ears with it.)

In any case, does anyone have a recommendation for a style of chin strap? I understand that this will be personal, in the sense that eveyone's head has a different shape etc. Just looking for info. thanks!

p.s. I use Swift nasal pillows.

I use a Ruby Chin Strap. It fastens with Velcro, but there's a small enough amount of it that it's not scratchy. It leaves the ears entirely free. I was worried it would be too hot in summer as well; we've had some hot nights here already and it hasn't been too bad. You can search it on Amazon, or I think cpap.com carries it as well.

I have used the CPAP- CAP chin strap for two or three years and like it pretty well. Since it is made of cotton only, the strap part doesn't stretch and lose its resilience like the Ruby and
similar "stretchy" strap devices. Of course, there are individual preferences with all CPAP devices and not everyone is pleased with any particular strap.

I agree with the recommendation for the Ruby Red chinstrap - very soft and comfortable. It's made out of a foamy material.

But they do stretch out over time so I would recommend the adjustable one with velcro instead of one of the small/'medium/large fixed sizes. The adjustable ones can be a bit harder to find but it's worth the trouble and will let you use it for much longer.

Thanks everybody. Some users say that because of its design the Ruby pulls their jaw back and so exacerbates apnea. the stap I have now runs from the top of my head in front of my ears to my chin--pretty much in a straight line. I'll probably try the Ruby, but wonder if others have had this jaw pull back issue.

Keep the recommendations coming!

Avil: that's an interesting looking strap. Again though, the design looks like it might bring the jaw back, and I wonder if this isn't the opposite of what we want for apnea...the strap I have really pulls up, not back...hmmm...

I use the papCap. I like that the tension on my jaw is more vertical. I use the P10 nasal pillow mask with its one-size-fits-all headgear. I adjust the mask fit by sticking the headgear to some exposed velcro on the papCap. Good luck, Earl.

another question: do people wear their chin strap over or under their headgear? I'm wearing my nasal pillows over my chin strap; it works o.k. after trial and error. But I'd like any new chin strap to do well in terms of holding my headgear in place, or not messing with it anyway. thanks!

First tape, then chinstrap, then headgear.
