Dry throat and mouth with new Resmed machine...
Dry throat and mouth with new Resmed machine...
I have set my new Resmed S10 humidity to the Auto setting. I even raised and lowered humidty levels, turned the heated hose to various settings and even off, but I keep having a dry mouth and throat to the point I often wake up!
I NEVER had any trouble when using my old Resmed Elite set at 9 with my old nasal mask. However, since my doctor raised my pressure level to 14 and replaced my old machine with the new one (with a full mask due to the pressure blowing air out of my mouth), I can't find a setting that works!
Is the problem with the machine, pressure or something else. I LOVED my old machine and it worked so well for over 6 years. I never had this amount of problem with my first machine. For now, I'm hating this new setup.
Suggestions and/or similar experiences are very much appreciated.

It sounds like you're breathing through your mouth. Please fill out your complete profile so we can see what you're working with. Also, I would suggest installing SleepyHead to better understand what's going on during your sleep sessions.

Some newer machines have leak rate settings to match particular masks, and it may be that someone set up your machine for a different mask, and you might need to just reset it... check your manual or DME.

If you need a stop-gap or permanent solution try the product below. I use it every night and it also helps protect your teeth from dry mouth, which can be very bad indeed. If you are mouth-breathing during CPAP therapy, then you need to solve that problem eventually:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: Dry throat and mouth with new Resmed machine...
I have been dealing with this problem since starting therapy, but have found no permanent fixes. It seems that the higher the pressure, the worse the problem of dryness becomes. Room humidity levels seem to play a major role in dry throat and mouth. Surprisingly it seems that higher room humidity and temperature contributes to dryness. Here in the south, as the humidity rises, the machine is unable to add as much moisture when the air humidity levels rise to normal summer levels, increasing dryness, while during the winter the machine uses several tanks to add the humidity. It seems that room air humidity does not have the same benefit as moisture added at the hose. There are some things that help, i.e. biotin, heated hose in winter, mouth guards, mouth taping, etc.. but non eliminate the problem, they just serve as band aids. I wish I could tell you that the problem will go away, but I have never found a permanent solution. Good luck.. if you discover a permanent solution, PLEASE let us know what it is .....!

Biotene mouth moisturizer (the correct spelling BTW) from my considerable experience is total and expensive junk, especially since they changed the formula a year or two ago. Try what I recommended above, which is the Orajel dry mouth moisturizer. It will last all night if you don't have a tendency to swallow it. To repeat, if you are having open mouth leaks, then you will eventually have to solve that problem, whether you have to try taping, or an FFM or whatever... a mouth moisturizer can only do so much. Just a side topic: if you wear a silicone teeth grinding guard you may find that it acts as a foreign object in your mouth and can stimulate your saliva glands. It doesn't work for everybody but for me it works great plus (as advertised) it stops teeth grinding:AlabamaAl wrote: There are some things that help, i.e. biotin,

My dentist gives me Colgate Prevident for dry mouth. After you brush your teeth and rinse, you brush this gel on and don't rinse. I use Biotene as a backup/supplement method on my bedside table, but the Prevident Dry Mouth works best. This also preserves your dental health while using BIPAP or CPAP.
Additionally, I use Walgreens saline nasal mist morning and evening to moisturize my nasal passages which contributes to less drying overall.
Hope this helps others.

Re: Dry throat and mouth with new Resmed machine...
I would say that the issue has a lot more to do with the change in pressure and mask than the new machine. The old machine with this mask and this pressure would give the same results. It seems that your machine is not an automatic, so you can't try setting a lower min and max at 14 or higher.

Re: Dry throat and mouth with new Resmed machine...
This dryness problem lies directly at the feet of the Resmed S9 manufacturer; it's obvious that this problem has been the subject of thousands of messages on the internet, but Resmed is oblivious. They HAVE known about this problem and have done nothing to fix it. Whatever they have done to fix it has not solved the problem, and they know it.
Waking up with the mouth so dry that your tongue sticks to the mouth is painful and occurs several times a night. Makes it impossible to keep the mask on during the night. I think we customers should band together and either boycot Resmed and go with something better or to be invented, or even litigation, as the dryness can cause damage to the teeth over time.
I am not a troublemaker, but as a customer I am very dissatisfied. I've written Resmed and they tell me to do this or that, and there is no improvement. How long should we tolerate such an expensive product which is so deficient.
