Delayed Sleep Syndrome

Post by bobsetzer » Fri May 15, 2015 11:37 am

How can I reset my delayed sleep syndrome...and what can you do when your circadian rhythm is way off? I have always been a night owl...and I want to back up my sleep pattern so I can be on a more normal pattern.

Do you think you could possibly give us something to go on, like... how long you've had the problem, how many hours you normally sleep, whether you're on shift work and what type of shifts, whether you're on Cpap or not, what equipment you use, what fixes have you tried in the past to deal with it, have you seen any doctors and/or specialists, and do you take meds? We'd like to help, and I do understand your question, but need some hint about your problem.

See this link for various sites:

Essentially, the best way according to most experts is to reset a DSP body clock is to use light therapy in the early morning and/or take melatonin before going to bed. Many people have tried doing this on their own but you might want to consult a sleep doctor with a neurology background for assistance because the timing can be tricky for both the light therapy and the melatonin.

Since we're not trying to diagnose and treat the OP I don't think we really need all that history and detail.

bobsetzer -- As 49er suggested, a Google search on "delayed sleep phase" yields a wealth of articles -- check out the ones on reputable websites like Mayo Clinic, American Association of Sleep Medicine, National Institutes of Health, and Stanford. An example from one of the Stanford web pages: http://web.stanford.edu/~dement/delayed.html

You mentioned setting your sleep schedule "back" -- some of the approaches to DSPS actually involve advancing the sleep schedule forward until the person has 'arrived' at the desired bedtime. This approach is called chronotherapy and you'll see it come up in many of the articles online.

You are of course welcome to discuss your situation in more detail but in this case it wasn't necessary in order for us to give you a few good suggestions about where to start.

bob, please check this report and next explain why you want and are ready to deal with your assumed DSPD syndrome, given the complexities involved.
