Full face mask pushs back my jaw

Post by HanzT » Thu May 14, 2015 4:27 pm

Just wondering if anyone has noticed this. It seems that when I tighten my full face mask, the Airfit but the make doesn't really matter I don't think, it seems to pull my jaw back. That's the exact opposite of what my dental device does, which is move the jaw forward to open the airway. Anyone notice less air flow when they tighten their full face mask? I'm starting to wonder if that's an issue for me. Any suggestions to solve that?
Thanks, H

You can overtighten them. If you are adjusting the straps without the mask being under air pressure, you could be over tightening it. The silicon seal needs to expand to form the seal.

It may be that you have the lower strap too tight. Sometimes looser is better with mask cushions.

Not for me.
I keep my teeth/jaw together, my tongue to the roof of my mouth and don't over-tighten my headgear (most of the tension is on the bottom straps). It works better if the mask "floats" on one's face. Over-tightening can contribute to more leaks. It's also important to have the correct size mask.

I have the same problem so I got a Ruby chinstrap. It lets you set the tension you need plus the fore and aft top straps give you a lot of customization options:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Sounds like I need to play with the straps again.

Anyone ever try wearing a dental device and a mask? That would solve my issue of holding my jaw forward (which seems to loosen and go back as I sleep) but would be a pain.

Yes, I think that is the first step.

Instead you might try a soft cervical collar - very cheap trial and easy to tolerate, at least it is for me.

The main function of the collar is to hold your neck/airway in the best position for air flow. It seems to also help a little bit to keep the jaw from dropping.

The one I use is similar to this - http://www.amazon.com/Carex-Health-Bran ... cal+collar

I live in a subtropical climate and have no problem tolerating it in even the worst of the summer.

I sometime use a dental MAD ... I have it set in a neutral position to keep my lower jaw from going back after i go to sleep. I also use a cervical collar to keep my jaw closed. and I use a nasal pillow mask with this set up.

everyone need to find what works for them
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

That is a problem with ff masks for some, including me. I do much better with a nasal mask, but lately I've had some allergies so I'm back in the Quattro and it's really noticeable.

Some of the experts say that this is common and it means that higher pressure is needed for many people when they use FFM's. Others will say this is nonsense.

Me, I think it happens to some people, and is one of the things you have to consider when choosing a mask.

Some lazy DME's push FFM's so they don't have to deal with nasal mask problems and don't put the patient's need first. Or they may simply be ignorant of the problems of FFM's.

I think a FFM is the wrong first choice for mask and should only be used if there are problems with nasal masks.

I had the same problem: my jaw tends to drop during sleep even without a mask, which could be fixed with either of:
- dental guard
- partial mouth taping (most comfortable for me)
- chin-strap
- cervical collar

Thanks for all the posts. I do have nasal allergies so that's how I ended up on the full face mask. I'm going to try both my MAD/dental device, and more pressure after I give that a shot. Then the neck collar. Having some new ideas is nice because it increases the feeling of hope. Thanks again.

My first choice would be the cervical collar. Then a little less tension on the bottom straps might do the trick.
