Rent to own cpap machine

Post by Chefchad37 » Fri May 08, 2015 9:23 pm

Fellow cpap users,
I was wondering if you know of anyone that is willing to rent to own a resmed s9 autoset cpap machine? I don't have any health insurance and would like to update my cpap machine. Anyone that could help me out or point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advanced.

Rent to own is an expensive credit line. Why not buy on credit instead? Do you have a prescription for CPAP? If you do then purchasing from CPAP.com using a credit card would get you setup for $883 (Airsense 10 Autoset). Let's say you have less than great credit and have a card that charges 22%. If you bought that APAP and paid $100 per month, you'd pay it in 10 months with a financing cost of $89. No one will give you a better deal on rent to own. Better credit, lower cost. No credit, start looking for a used machine and expect to pay cash.

Agree - rent-to-own CPAP machine is a DME approach to make more money - guess from whom they are making that money... Used Resmed S9 Autosets are available for $479 from secondwindcpap.com. If you really want a new one secondwindcpap has open box with 0 hours for $699. If you want a new one in an unopened box, check out CPAP.com. Other possibilities are buying from someone on the forums (STLMark comes highly recommended) or buying from Craigslist (greyghost can give you tips about searching Craigslist).

If you don't have/can't get a prescription, then buying from someone on the forums or Craigslist are the primary avenues available to you.

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Rent to own seems to be the only way I'm allowed to buy a machine. I'm about to purchase my second machine, and each time the durable medical equipment supplier has told me my insurance (Blue Care Network) will only let me rent the machine for the first year, then if I'm still using it (and I will be), my rental payments will be credited as my portion of the cost. My new one, a PR System One 760, will be about $80 per month. I'd rather bite the bullet and pay for the whole thing now, but they won't let me.

Talk to your insurance company, they will tell you what you can do under the insurance.

Got mine to approve purchase with still 10 months rental left in Jan.

Krelvin,
I don't have any health insurance. That is why I'm hoping to find someone who would help me out getting a new updated cpap machine. Any ideas?

Sorry, was responding to HairyReasoner...

The only machines that I know of personally that are being sold by private parties I would trust are both new machines. One is an S9 autoset with humidifier for around $600 and the other is an AutoSense 10 Autoset for around $650 (that would include the built in humdifier as well).

There have been some good used machines for less, and you could always look at something like secondwind, S9 Autoset lightly used for around $450 but that doesn't include the humidifier.

None of those places will "rent" to own. there is not enough profit for them to do that.

A regular DME might do it, but it will cost a lot more.

Kelvin,
Who has the autosense air 10 autoset cpap machine for sale? I would be interested in this machine. Could you point me in the right direction for this machine. Are they associated with the forum? Please let me know. Thank you for your help.

How is that possible? I thought EVERYBODY was now mandated to have health insurance.

And, why is it you feel you need a "new" machine?

It's very "cost effective" to acquire lightly used, previously owned or otherwise older machines with lots of life left in them.
Many of them are fully data-capable, too. All of my machines (listed below) were made between 2005 and 2007, and they serve me very well. Most (all but three) were purchased from individuals and/or were previously owned. Several had fewer than 10 blower hours on them and were a fraction of their original selling prices when new.

When the fine costs less than the insurance, and the "cheap" plan has a $2000 deductible or more, it is cheaper to go without. When I almost lost my employer based insurance, the cheapest plan I could find cost 4 times as much as my current plan, and the deductible was 5 times my current deductible. And that was with the subsidy. I was not able to tell if it would be useful for prescriptions or not, but it I could go all year and not have a single doctor appointment or cpap supply covered with that plan.

My brother and sister both own their own business. Neither one has health insurance. They don't qualify for the free insurance. Why would anybody in good health pay $500 a month for a plan that has a $2000 deductible? You have to spend $8000 before a single thing gets paid. If you only go to the doctor a few times a year and don't have many prescriptions, it makes more sense to pay the fine.

I met a lady who has insurance and still can't afford her asthma medication. Her monthly inhaler was still over $200. Who can afford that per month? Mine costs me $22 with insurance, but has a cash price of $529. That is insane.

As it is, I have insurance, but I still buy some of my cpap supplies via ebay. The prices are sometimes cheaper than my copay, and I don't want to waste my deductible paying retail prices. I would rather use it on doctor visits and then use my insurance to buy supplies.

It may not have been evident, but I had my tongue firmly implanted in my cheek when I wrote that.

So much for the "Affordable Care Act"..........

I'm very glad to be the age I am, retired when I did and now being on Medicare. Getting old sucks, but the gubberment is making things worse. Even on Medicare, the supplemental insurance with the doughnut hole gets expensive, too.

Hang in there.

Assumption they are in the US ? Not sure but there can be a lot of reasons why the don't have insurance even in the US.

As for a new machine, his profile indicates a M-Series machine. That is quite old now. An S9 would be a huge improvement and provide easy data access as well.

Even some of the S9s are "old" by some standards by now. (about 5 years since they hit the market)

That still doesn't preclude finding decent, inexpensive, lightly used machines in the open market (outside of the DMEs).
