2 Nights with CPAP - Question.

Post by Madzamboni » Fri May 01, 2015 6:56 am

I've had my Respronics Airsense S10 Autoset for two days now and am using a nasal mask. Although I am still figuring out how to get comfortable, deal with the hose, and set the tightness on my mask properly - I've gotten two days of 7.5 hours sleep with no leaks. But I have a few questions.

1. My body wants to wake up earlier. I'm guessing about an hour to an hour half earlier than my alarm I start coming to and have a desire to wake up. I try to go back to sleep, and I do some, but find I start fiddling with my mask, etc. When I do get up I feel like I slept too much. Has anyone else experienced this? The only thing I can think of is that the quality of sleep I am getting is better so my body doesn't feel as if I need as much. But that is just a shot in the dark. Thoughts?

2. I realized the first night I tightened down too much, so I was much looser last night which was more comfortable and seemed to have no leaks. However I seem to have marks on my face from the chin strap and harness on my chin and cheeks. Considering I throw on a hat and go straight to the gym, I don't like walking in with those creases (although they are mostly faded by then). I am assuming I just need to "toughen up buttercup" as its just the nature of the beast?

3. The effects of a CPAP are cumulative, correct? I feel different in the morning on days one and two already - more clear headed, fogginess is gone, I am sharp and moving right away. But my desire to nap in the afternoon still exists. Are the chances of that desire to nap in the afternoon likely to decrease over time, or if I am supposed to feel all affects on day one?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ha! That made me laugh.

Lots of people find that their sleep habits change after getting their PAP therapy optimized. My guess is that you are right, with the higher quality sleep, your body may just need less sleep. There's an easy way to test this theory: Just get up when you wake up with a desire to wake up. And stay up and see how well you function during the day.
2. I realized the first night I tightened down too much, so I was much looser last night which was more comfortable and seemed to have no leaks. However I seem to have marks on my face from the chin strap and harness on my chin and cheeks. Sounds like you may still have the straps too tight. Or you might find using a mask pad and/or strap pads will help with the marks on your chin and cheeks. (Padacheek sells high quality ones)
The effects of CPAP are cumulative.

And you are already in the luck few who are seeing real improvement during the first week of PAPing! Most people don't see much improvement for at least a few weeks.

And yes, with time the desire to nap (if you're getting enough sleep at night) should decrease. But do keep this mind: Some people's bodies enjoy a nap during the afternoon and then the body just sleeps a bit less at night. If you avoid the daytime naps, however, your body might just not wake up quite so early in the morning.

Finally: Any naps you take should be with the CPAP.

to avoid confusing people, it's not respironics, it's RESMED, and there's no such thing as a 'S10" unless you're talking about pickup trucks.

it's a Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset.

You are one of the lucky ones - congratulations! So am I. What did your sleep test show? My AHI was 80, solidly in the severe category. It seems that the more severe the apnea, the easier people take to it and the higher the compliance rates.

Welcome to Hosehead Land! There may be little tweaks and issues that come up as time goes on - they can all be handled. Your next step might be to go to the top of the forum and read the threads about sleepyhead - the wonderful free software we use to monitor our progress and post the charts you sometimes see. You can go back and actually look at every breath you took all night long - amazing!

And here is a great hose hanger you can get from amazon for only $11: http://www.amazon.com/North-American-He ... B0034CHMRU
It looks like this when assembled:

I got the same message when I went to Amazon.
So I went to EBay and there's someone there with that item listed for $19.99 with free shipping
and another seller has the same thing listed for $75 with free shipping.
Goes to show you that it pays to do a little bit of looking around when EBay shopping.
