Cough advice?

Post by fmj13 » Sun Apr 12, 2015 8:36 am

Having a dry couch from a cold is bad enough, but it is really bad when one is wearing an airfit f10. That in itself is better than coughing with a taped mouth, which I normally do with my pilairo Q. I have been using Mucinex maximum strength, but I can't completely kick this cold. Any advice is appreciated.

If it is more then 7 days you need to see a doctor. You could have bronchitis or pneumonia and yes you could have pneumonia without fever or feeling really bad - it is often referred to as "walking pneumonia" and it can damage your lungs permanently.

Add a lot of humidity to your room with a steamer and vicks or eucalyptus.

Persistent dry cough can also be a sign of acid or acid fumes in the airway.

And Lisinopril can actually make a cough worse, if not cause it.

Most of the time, turning the humidity up works, but some people feel better with less.

I want to chime in on what Julie said.
If you're taking Lisinopril (for blood pressure or kidney protection for Diabetes), consider that to be the culprit. There are other meds that will work just as well or better and not make you cough. Been there, got the T-shirt, cap and cup. With me it was about as immediate a reaction as could be. My doctor back then switched me to Diovan/Valsartan and another doctor a few years ago put me on Cozaar/Losartan.

Used to be, Mucinex was the standard of expectorants - guafinesen. Now it's just another brand of cough medicine, and you have to look very hard to find the guafinesen type that will loosen that dry cough.

Guaifenesin should always be taken with at least a full glass of water.
It thins the mucus, but needs water to do so.
Drinking your eight glasses a day is especially important, and may help thin mucus even without the GF.

Chicken soup with matzo balls and noodles. And Vicks Vapo Rub on your chest covered by a washcloth.

And wear a nasal mask so you don't blow the filter out of the machine.

And see a doctor if it doesn't get better in a few days.
