Allergies or CPAP

Post by cnl390 » Sat Feb 07, 2015 7:42 am

I wake up every morning with a stuffy nose, sniffling, and sneezing. The clogged up nose gets worse in the evening and I have to go through a session of intense nose blowing to clear. I sneeze and my nose will clog somewhat during the day. I is "cedar fever" season here in south Texas, but I am 60 and have never had cedar allergies before. Also I do not have watery or itchy eyes nor runny nose.
Could this be caused by CPAP, or have I developed allergies.

It could be related to the humidifier setting. Some people need more and some need less.
Google "cpap rhinitis"
If using an already low humidity setting...try higher.
If using an already higher setting...try lower.
If using a middle of the road setting...toss a coin which way to go.
If not using a humidifier at all...get one.

The symptoms the nasal mucosa give us when they aren't happy with the moisture can mimic the worst allergy attack ever....
been there and done that and have that T Shirt.
Humidity needs vary highly among people...there's no real right or wrong...there's just what works for the individual.
Some need next to none and some can barely get enough....

The one thing that kind of throws me a curve is would the symptoms persist all day and get worse in the evening.

Have you ever had allergy testing done? I would start there.

It could persist. When I have had this happen to me (forget to add water and the humidifier went dry for most of the night) I was pretty miserable for 3 to 5 days.

It could also be from something else like allergies but it's pretty easy to play with the humidity settings to see if it makes a difference.
Beware....if the nasal mucosa act up like mine you may not see immediate results as it took a few nights for my nasal mucosa to get back to normal when they got too dry.

Get something like Simply Saline and use it often during the day and see if it helps.
Try an allergy med to see if it helps.
Play with the humidity settings to see if it helps.

Lower your humidity for a couple of days... if things don't clear up, see your MD.
