Heated Hose Cleaning

Post by Hosehead4ever » Fri Feb 06, 2015 12:25 pm

I have a hose brush that I use when cleaning my hoses. I now have a new ClimateLineAir hose and I don't know if it's okay to use the hose brush in it or if the inside of the hose is fragile.

did you ever scrap anything out of your hoses with it in the past?

I had this same question regarding cleaning the heated hose. I contacted CPAP.com and they said it was perfectly okay to clean it with the hose brush as the heating element is on the outside of the hose. Make sure you get the correct brush for the diameter of the hose you are cleaning. As to it being fragile, I would obviously not scrub it like you do the kitchen floor , just gently move it through and around the hose.

as PR was eluding to..........there is no need to use a brush, you'll do more damage to the hose with the brush than doing nothing at all.

All the air flow through your hose is coming from the machine with a filter, you could leave your hose alone for it's entire life and not have any problem. Start using a brush and you'll end up doing more damage than good........they sell those things because they make money, plain and simple.

If you want to clean the hose just fill it with warm soapy water and then rinse thoroughly, there are plenty of long-timers that never bother cleaning a perfectly good hose.

As an alternative you could use a Control III & water mixture for disinfecting instead of soapy water, but the best course is leave it alone.

Okay, I have been using Dr. Bronner's unscented soap and Control III with the brush to scrub. I guess that is overkill?

I really don't want to admit this, but..............when I was a "Newbie" I took my cleaning too seriously, and I bought a hose brush from cpap.com

I had a $50 heated hose that I paid for out of pocket, and I diligently brushed the inside of the hose. So one day I hung the hose up by the ends with water in it, and was totally shocked to see multiple places on the hose where water was pissing out through very small holes. Those holes were put there by me using the brush, and I thought I was being very, very gentle.

The problem is the plastic in the hose between the electrical wires and support structure is paper thin and will puncture really easily! So I was out fifty bucks with a relatively new heated hose that had multiple leaks in it.

I have learned over the years to not obsess about cleaning. I do clean my mask, mask cover, and humidifier tub when needed, but that's about it.........and I have never seen anything in the humidifier that really needs cleaning because I have a quality supply of distilled water.........I've never seen any scale, build up, or any slime coating that some people talk about. If you think about it, if you have "real" distilled water in the tub, it would be impossible to get any build up of anything in the tub.

So take the cleaning routine with a grain of salt, so to speak, and don't clean the hose with a brush. A soaking for ten minutes in a Control III solution is all you need, and you probably don't really even need that.

I would sell you my hose brush................but I threw it in the trash

I bought both sizes of brushes, because I had both sizes of hoses. But now have come to the conclusion that I will probably need a new hose before it will need cleaned. With filtered air blowing through it and no water water standing in it, I can't see the need for frequent cleaning.

What are you using your XPAP hose for that would require cleaning? Mine only has cleaned filtered air blown thru it, I don't use it to clean out the john, I don't even allow it in that room. Jim

Before the heated hose, even with the hose cover on my old grey hose, I would get water in the hose. Even though it's distilled, I assumed it would need cleaning after that. My bad.

I do recommend getting a second hose when your insurance will pay for it. After that, clean your hose very well every so often and switch the old and the new. Let the clean one sit dry for a few weeks to kill any residual germs.

I use unheated hoses, so I buy them for $5 each or so, and replace them every 6 months or so.

Part of my cleaning ritual is to put it on the kitchen sink faucet and let the hottest tap water I can get run through the hose. If you have the right aerator on the faucet, the hose will fit on it.

What size is the heated hose for the Air Curve 10 VAuto? Does it come in slim and standard or just standard?

I found this thread by looking for a longer brush for my Resmed ClimateLineAir hose with the 90 degree bend. With the 90 degree bend I can only get the brush in from one end and its not long enough, maybe the smaller diameter brush would make it past the bend?

Apparently, those recommending not to clean your hose know better than the manufacturer. I've always cleaned my hose with a brush and have never damaged it.

The filters on a CPAP machine filter out what exactly? Highly unlikely its mold spores. If you get moisture in the hose there is a chance of mold growing, please clean it properly.

I've used a brush on a standard hose. I now have the Air Curve 10 Auto Bipap and the heated hose. The book that came with the hose says the air blows at a low rate after stopping therapy to blow out any remaining moisture. Mine does blow after removing at a low volume. Therefore it is selfcleaning as far as moisture and any mold buildup. I do nothing with it now except clean the mask and change the filters.

My sleep doc. told me to definitely clean the hose. He said use a mixture of half white vinegar and half water. I just mix it in a one cup measuring cup and use that to pour the solution into the hose. Swish it around a little and drain it. Rinse with tap water. and let it dry.

I bought the original hose brush, after being assured that it would fit the slimline and heated slim hoses.
It was so difficult to push the hose in, (and more so pulling it out)
that I immediately retired it for pulling out the dust bunnies from under the fridge.
I would never have purchased it if I had known it would not work and that I could not return it.
I actually never tried to return it, as it was cheap, and our hosts (the sellers) are awesome.
