Help with Remstar Plus M-Series

Post by sleepyheader1 » Thu Feb 05, 2015 2:08 pm

Hello all,

First, thanks for such a wonderful community; you're by and large the most popular and linked in every site/blog I see. So you must be doing something right.

A brief background: I went to my first sleep study ($2100), and they diagnosed me (another $200) with mild to moderate sleep apnea. But they want at least one more sleep study and many more appointments, which I just don't have the money for. So I'm embarking on this trek by myself and am studying the different settings.

I believe this is the unit I have (I do have the humidifier): Image

I purchased the Remstar Plus M-Series new from CL and I'm waiting on my mask from Amazon. I'm doing all my studying here and haven't finished reading all the info that I need to quite yet. From another post, I believe I got the physician's settings so I can change pressure, etc. But I was wondering if anyone else has used this unit and could provide any tips or insights. Again, I still have to read about the different pressures and info about the humidifier, but any info would help.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance!

With the humidifier looks like:

Humidifier is simple to operate, just turn the knob from off to higher to increase humidity. Fairly large tank.

Kind of older machine, 2 series behind current models. Uses smartcard instead of an SDcard though if my notes are accurate, DS 200 is not full data-capable.
Current Settings PS 4.0 over 10.6-18.0 (cmH2O) - Resmed S9 VPAP Auto w/h5i Humidifier - Quattro Air FFM
TNET Sleep Resource Pages - CPAP Machine Database
Put your equip in your Signature - SleepyHead v1.0.0-beta-1

The main drawback to that machine is lack of any data to evaluate the therapy effectiveness.
I take it the second recommended sleep study was to hopefully find an optimal therapy pressure. Without a starting idea as to pressure needs you are going to be flying really blind and pressure needs aren't dictated by severity of apnea.
My first machine was an M series machine except a full data model.
If you haven't found the provider manual you can get it here and learn a little about the ins and outs of the machine.
Just request it via email. Instructions near the bottom of the page.

Here's the quick setup guide which may be all you need.

I really wish you'd come here first, and then you'd have found out that those were great machines 7 years ago. I had one similar.

they haven't been made in probably five years? something like that.

The problem with the M-Series Plus is that you will have no way to self-titrate without data. I hope you didn't spend a lot on that machine. There is a fully data capable new Philips Respironics System One 60 series Auto available from a forum member for $350. If you can swing that on your budget, I like your odds better. With the M-Plus, you will just be guessing, and the forum members really have no information to help other than to wish you well.

That said, many people do great on CPAP, find comfortable settings, and I'm sure that you will feel better using this. A good first guess would be to start at a pressure of about 8.0 cm and see how you feel. The unit has a ramp feature that you should not allow to run at the default starting pressure of 4.0 for 45 minutes. You may want to turn off ramp or increase minimum pressure and shorten the time to reach therapy pressure.
