I know you've got Katy all good with her question about the different leak reporting on the different machines, but it brought up one question........I know on the ResMed machines that in the settings you have to tell the machine which mask type you are using, I assume because different mask types have different set vent rates..........so how much difference does that make if someone had the setting on the wrong mask type? I'm not familiar with the newer Resperonics machines, but I am gathering that since they use total leak that you don't have that same setting on those machines?
well, you'll hear varying theories, but mine is that the mask settings have little to nothing to do with calculating the excessive leak rate reported.

if you look at a resmed chart of leak rates, there's very little correlation between mask type and vent rate, in fact, some masks of the same type have much more different vent rates than masks of other types do.

however, the masks types tend to have similar resistances (usually spec'd in the manual after the expected vent rate). and I have noticed that if the wrong mask type is set, it can prevent the smartstart from turning the machine off. (set it for full face, which has low resistance, and put a pillow mask on, which has a much higher resistance, and smartstart doesn't recognize a mask off situation and turn off the machine.)

draw your own conclusions.

Makes perfect sense to me..........I think my conclusion is In-line with yours.

also, what the new respironics machines DO have is a 'resistance setting', and numbers marked on masks so you know what to set the resistance setting to.
all their full face, and nasal masks are x1, then pillow masks vary based on size... large, x1, medium x2, small x4...

I think they're playing catchup to the mask settings on the s9. as always, draw your own conclusions.

Have you tried changing hoses. Maybe you have a leak in the hose.

Since this is a brand new machine and a brand new hose I doubt the hose is a problem...besides if it was I would expect the leak to be more pronounced all through the night and not so targeted to small short lived time frames.
Not sure exactly when Katy got this brand new machine but I don't think it has been longer than 2 weeks.

The only reason I suggested the hose was that I had a climate line hose that only leaked at certain times depending on how the hose was moved during the night as you slept. If I had a dollar for everything new that was broke or didn't work right in my life time I'd be a very rich man.

Machine is less than a week old. Last Friday was first night using it. And it is set to the correct hose and mask types.

TanglesHose, we already have discussed setting up the old machine in the guest room so I can go in there if I'm keeping him up. He's the breadwinner. If I don't sleep, the housework will suffer. His sleep pays the bills.

Pugsy, I did tighten the top strap one notch and I was good the rest of the night so we'll see what tonight brings. I have never adjusted the side/back strap once I got it set right.

Fingers crossed, hope for the best.
