TV commercials abound on painless (or nearly) catheters for the other end.
They spare no expense because if it hurts, it doesn't get used.
Apparently when you are unconscious they will shove any old thing down your throat.
Wow CF, I had absolutely zero problems. No sore throat whatsoever or any problems from intubation. It could be because my surgery was only 1.5 hours. But I have heard of people getting sore throats even when intubated for this procedure.

Needless to say, if god forbid, I have to have surgery again with intubation, I will make sure a copy of the anesthesia report is sent to the appropriate people. It could just be it was a matter of luck but since everything went so well, I would be a fool not to do this.

Sorry your voice is still messed up. Just what you needed.

I am 3 weeks post op for my hip replacement.

It seems all the worrying I did prior to surgery concerning cpap was needless. When I arrived in pre op they labeled my machine and took it right to the pacu so it would be all set up for me when I arrived from surgery. I used the cpap in recovery with oxygen bleed into my hose. It was so good not to struggle to breathe.

Once I was transferred to a room they helped set the cpap up where I could reach it.

I was in a rehab center for 7 days and used the cpap the entire time. Funny observation, only the nurses were allowed to put water in the machine! I was asked if I need help using the cpap....guess they thought I was new to it. In all it was a good cpap experience.

I took it to the hospital, there was a sticker on my chart, but it was never used. I spent hours, being yelled at by nurse, telling me I just needed to wake up. Deep, horrible anesthesia (my first general in 50 years, always opting for local or regional). after hours of this and who knows what oxygen sats, developed deep throbbing headache and vertigo...probably from hypoxia. I lost two extra days from work for recovery from recovery. I wish i could sue, but no way of measuring how many neurons I lost. I was very, very aggressive about talking to anesthesia the day before. Didn't help.
What a horrible result. I do hope that you have complained to the hospital about this treatment, so that it is prevented in future.

On the instructional form from the hospital, for all 3 procedures last year (one inpatient, 2 outpatient), they mention that if you use an xpap, to bring the machine with you. Maybe your hospital simply lags behind? At the very least, they should have been giving you oxygen (which is what they did for my brother in the past when he didn't have his machine).

Did you receive a survey from the hospital? Or did someone from a call center phone you to ask you what you thought of your stay? That's where you can let them know how they did. In many hospitals, such as the one my wife works at, reimbursement from the payor (insurance/gubm'nt) is influenced by the hospital receiving a good score on the survey. And since reimbursement is contingent on the evaluation score, the hospital looks at the surveys very carefully and follows up when something is reported amiss. The staff and departments are also evaluated on the results. Sort of like when you buy a new car, the sales-droids beg you to give them an excellent rating. Same reason.

I had heart surgery when I was 8 years old and the thing that I remember the most was waking up while still intubated. It was HORRIBLE. If I tried to swallow or speak it hurt and made this horrible gurgling sound. My parents were let in the recovery room and my mom kept saying "Can you talk? Can you talk?" GRRRRR--NO!!!! They kept it in a while (I have no idea how long--hours at least--probably because even then I had a small airway and probably had apnic events (in those days there were no CPAP's in regular use). I remember them taking it out, too. Horrible experience! Bad memories!

so, let me see if I get this right... you would *not* recommend nightly intubation as an alternative to cpap???
