One can do a lot of things with a line, but in the context of queuing up very few people stand "on" it. They stand "in" it.
No use to get upset about regionalism in idiomatic expression. Interesting comments here - https://quay.wordpress.com/2006/12/20/s ... g-on-line/

I enjoyed the reference to Stanley Kubrick standing on line.

I received an official letter from Bank of Ney York Mellon in which this Financial Institution spelled "Capital" as "Capitol"......in reference to "Capital Gains"

Unbelievable when it's their Business!!!

The person that let that letter go out should have been fired.

+1

"Artefact" is listed as a variant of "artifact" in some U.S. dictionaries.

I did mention in my first post on page one of this thread that American Dictionaries list both spellings as acceptable, with Artifact as the preferred version in the U.S.........which brings us to another rant.......seems that some people don't really READ completely before posting

Just as I suspected, it's another attempt to marginalize us poor southerners. Perhaps I'll go have a soda and try to forget about it.

Seeing as we're doing this, can someone tell me when and why the phrase "I'm going to lie down" became "I'm going to lay down"? It's been a longggg time.

How about a rant about people who have the silly expectation that everyone who comments in a thread will first have read all the measly posts.

I think it also might have struck me the same way as the incorrect pronunciation of "suite" (as in furniture) as 'suit' (in clothes), and that's really hard to hear!
Just out of curiosity, I spelled it into a blank MS Word document and the one with "i" was deemed correct and the one with "e" was initially auto-corrected to an "i" and when I deliberately changed it back to an "e" it red-underlined it as incorrect.

I can't say that I've ever seen it spelled with an "e", but then there's still quite a few things I still haven't seen.

It depends on which dictionary you use. If you use a French one your whole document will be red.

Oh, you are a Southerner. Not too many years ago I flew into Birmingham in January and it was a tiny bit cold. A Southern gentleman picked me up at the airport and we started on a two-hour drive.

He told me he had the car heater running so that I would not get cold, but asked that I should tell him if it was too warm and he would cut it off. That was fine.

A while later I asked him if he thought it was getting warm in the car. He said, "Yes, I will cut the heater off."

Then the pleasant gentleman added, "If you get too cool, let me know and I will cut the heater on."

Now I understand "cutting off the heater", but how do you in the South "cut it on".

I've always wondered about the Bob Dylan song "Lay Lady Lay". I've had a suspicion (and apparently many others have, too) that it was written about a dog......and not a woman. But, I've never been able to find any definitive proof about it being about a dog (or a woman for that matter).

Then, there's the Eric Clapton song "Lay Down Sally". Sounds like another "dog" song.

Don't mind me, I'm in a weird mood today.
