New Resmed Mirage Quattro cushion smells like ashtray

Post by HD4me » Fri Jan 09, 2015 7:11 pm

Is this normal? I've been soaking in Dawn dish soap but still smells awful. Any suggestions?

Saw a recent thread like this. Soaking the silicone parts of machine and masks in diluted vinegar, or washing and soaking in Dawn...silicone holds odors. Worst case, buy new silicone pieces to replace.

doesn't sound new to me, a new cushion has virtually no smell at all.

I'd return it and gripe.

absent that, vinegar, oxyclean, and running through the dishwasher worked for me destinking some other silicone.

If it really is "new", take it back and politely demand a new one. I had the same problem once, and the humidifier was replaced at no cost to me.

Who sold it to you? DME or somewhere online? That's so gross. I wouldn't mess with just get a refund and go somewhere else.

Was the "new" cushion in a sealed package when you got it?

Go figure. I missed the "new" part meaning brand new. I guess I thought of it more like "new to me," or something. Or I missed it altogether.
In that case...New should = new, chemical smell, if anything. Ashtray = unacceptable.

I have removed "most" of the smoke smell from a cushion by putting it in a sealed container
with a cotton ball sprayed liberally with Ozium. (The cushion was not touching the cotton ball)
Like I said, "most", but it was not enough for me right away, but eventually the smell was gone,
---like several months later.

This was the complete Mirage Quattro unit with headgear etc. All new and sealed in original package with manuals, carrying case, frame and all. I purchased on eBay, but since I have used it I feel I'm stuck so just trying to make it smell decent. It's soaking in vinegar and Dawn dish soap now. I hope it works because it's the first full face mask that hasn't hurt the bridge of my nose and is pretty comfortable as well.

Some people have tried boiling silicone parts in water with some baking soda in it. I'd probably boil the water first and turn off the heat before dunking

You do risk damaging the mask parts until you try out the particular mask type.

Resmed says not to put it in the dishwasher, but I do it with my masks. (Not a Quattro, though.)

Are you sure it's the cushion and not the mask frame?

As for being new, lots of folks have plastic sealing machines these days. I've also noticed a lot of CPAP parts are in bags that have air holes. If it was in a smoker's house, it might soak up the smells even if it is still sealed.
