I think the reality is somewhere in between your two views, it's not quite as bad as he makes it out to be (certainly not as bad as cops) but worse than you feel it is.

Actually, I don't think it's that bad, and not everyone is part of the club, consciously or otherwise. I think there's still a strong bias within "the system." Even if you're not part of "the conspiracy," the biases involved are deeply ingrained in the culture of the group.

It's a really bad problem in many groups in our society. I think it's a very deep part of human culture going back into our primitive tribal societies. I've seen some discussion about the tribal society aspects of groups in our culture, including things like how things like abusive internship and med school practices compare to tribal initiation rites.
