AHI #

Post by tireddaisey » Fri Dec 12, 2014 11:03 am

Using the P10 nasal pillow mask, good fit, successful nights (increasing my time using), able to fall asleep quickly. Now my next newbie question is that my AHI consistently shows in the 2.3-2.8 range. Is this okay, being under the magic "5", or could it be better? Should I be looking at a higher pressure. Currently, my pressure is set at 8, stopped using the ramp a week ago after the P10 was sent.

My computer is going through some issues so I don't have Sleepyhead downloaded successfully yet so only have the useless Sleepmapper to show my AHI #'s, time asleep, and mask fit.

Any thoughts?

How do you feel?

Chasing a number can be counter productive for some people.

Even it the AHI was entirely made up of OAs and hyponeas...2 to 3 range AHI is certainly acceptable and wouldn't necessarily require any pressure adjustments.

It's very possible that the AHI also contains some Clear Airway events (centrals) and we don't treat centrals with more pressure anyway.

So I wouldn't go changing anything until I saw what that AHI is made up of first...make sure what you are maybe wanting to fix is something that is fixable with more pressure (not that it is really need at this stage).

Example...suppose that AHI of 2.8...the event category breakdown maybe went like this..
OA 0.4
Hyponea 0.9
CA 1.5

The CA gets mentally ignored...leaving 0.4 plus 0.9 obstructive in nature events which is 1.3 and very nice indeed and for sure doesn't really need fixing.

Or maybe the breakdown went like this
OA 0.1
Hyponea 0.1
CA 2.6

Always make sure that what you want to maybe fix is fixable by what you are thinking of doing.
No amount of pressure (unless using the high dollar specialty machines) is going to reduce the Centrals and thus isn't fixable and for small numbers of centrals doesn't need fixing anyway.

Until you get the software you won't know what the breakdown into event categories is..and thus can't really know if there's anything there that can be fix (not that it needs to in your situation).

Her machine doesn't give a leak number unless the software is used (which she doesn't have installed yet)...she's using SleepMapper and/or the information off the LCD screen and mainly all it says is % of time in large leak (that's off the LCD screen) or with SleepMapper it give a % of "good" leak control...so 100% from SleepMapper means no large leaks.

So with the PR S1 machines...we want a low leak % to show up on the LCD screen but when using SleepMapper we want a high % shown.

Blackspinner-agreed on chasing the number! To be honest, I am improving day by day particularly with the P10 pillows. Now, I have to work on the extra weight that kept piling on while I was undiagnosed but I feel my energy and memory returning slowly. Happy with that

Pugsy-yes, my Mask # on Sleepmapper reads anywhere between 90-100% since switching from Opus to P10 so I'm taking that as a good sign. Thanks for the breakdown of sample readings.

I will hopefully get a chance to work on the SH data download, my laptop is not allowing the download so will be firing up the desktop and see what I can get going. I am just fine right now keeping a pressure of 8 all night and increasing my sleep time with the pillows-I was only at a disappointing 3-4 hours with Opus but increasing up to 6-7 now so that is my "homework" goal for the next few weeks!

Thanks everyone for your input!

For my own info on Friday had AHI of 1.3 one of the best #'s yet for me. I'm balancing this with how I feel and yesterday felt very energetic and coming out of this mental fog I wasn't even sure was happening! Onwards and upwards!
