Obesity, overeating and AHI

Post by old dude » Fri Dec 12, 2014 10:00 am

Let's get this out of the way up front: I'm about 5'10" and 275 lbs., so I figure I'm putting some pressure on my diaphragm from the start. I recently had a night where my AHI went from a normal reading of around 1.0 up to 3.5. PB jumped from a normal of 0-2% up to 7%. Not the end of the world for one night, I get that. But in wondering what might have caused this outlier night, I admittedly ate a heavy dinner late and ate too much.

Could this be related?

Even people without any sleep issues can have a bad night occasionally.
You described some of the the possible issues and you can can add Stress, environment, outside distractions, weather/temps.... the list can be quite long

One night does not a trend make...
Current Settings PS 4.0 over 10.6-18.0 (cmH2O) - Resmed S9 VPAP Auto w/h5i Humidifier - Quattro Air FFM
TNET Sleep Resource Pages - CPAP Machine Database
Put your equip in your Signature - SleepyHead v1.0.0-beta-1

I think it definitely could be related (unless all you ate was hay ).

Yes, it could be related to having a tummy way too full late at night.
It could also have easily just been a fluke weird/off/bad night. We all have them from time to time and sometimes we just can't think of anything we did differently that might have caused it. That's when I just blame the aliens...it's as good of a reason as any I suppose.

As time goes on you may have an occasion again to do the same thing again and if the same thing happens then you will likely be able to answer your own question.

Eating or drinking too much is guaranteed to mess you up big time--no maybe about it.
Don't ask how I know.

Well CF, you know I could easily see the drinking over-relaxing muscles and causing a jump in one's AHI. But I couldn't quite figure out the mechanism by which overeating would be problematic, although it sure looks as if that's what did it.

I sadly had to give up drinking my nightly glass or two of wine with dinner almost a couple years ago with my A-Flutter diagnosis.
