Oxygen concentrator turn on question

Post by Woody » Fri Dec 12, 2014 8:37 am

I use an O2 concentrator with my cpap. But because of the noise I have it in the next room.
Some times I just forget to turn it on. Would there be an easy CHEAP way to have the concentrator
start when my cpap is turned on. No a simple timer won't work as I don't go to bed at any set
time.

Does the concentrator stay on when unplugged and then plugged back in? Or do you have to push something to turn it back on? If it stays on there is a Stanley Radio Transmitter that you plug things into with a wireless remote to turn off and on. That way it could be left by your cpap machine to turn it on. I don't think there would be any safety concerns with it. My mom used it in the nursing home to turn on her light.

Make a heavy cardboard sign print on it in bold letters, "Turn on O2 Pump". Place sign over XPAP MASK. At some point in life we all need reminders. Jim

Okydoky thanks for that subjestion. I just looked on Ebay and it looks like they have just
what I need for about $12. And putting that sign over the cpap might help remind me I doubt
it would make me more compliant. I read in bed before sleep and want to avoid the hassle of needing
to get up walk to another room to turn the 02 machine on and the O2 machine is not suposed to
be turned on till I turn my cpap on.

Woody, the only thing in the back of my mind was can you tell if the machine is on from your bedroom? There is nothing on my remote that tells me it is on, so if you can here it or feel the O2 is on I would feel better. Just don't want to leave you thinking it was on and it wasn't.

I too, have the compressor in another room, I start it when I plan on going to bed but I don't attach ghe line to my XPAP, until I mask up. That way the O2 isn't going into the XPAP when it's not running. Also they make O2 adaptors that vent to the room if the XPAP is off. I lost mine... Jim

If you place a one way valve between the machine and the 02 bled in valve, it doesn't matter what order you turn the o2 and pap on. Respironics makes one.

My O2 concentrator is also in another room.
My wife often reminds me or even turns it on for me, but you can't have her.
I often turn the O2 on a few minutes before I mask up. It wouldn't bother me to leave it on for an hour before I mask up. I doubt the O2 will hurt the mask or the machine at 3 LPM. Of course I don't smoke or have a camp fire in my house.

the danger, such as it is, is if there's any kind of spark in the machine when it's been oxygenated greatly...

well, I certainly hope you don't!

there *probably* won't be any spark in the machine, but it's possible, and in a near pure o2 environment, it'd be bad. shit burns that you wouldn't believe... (dunk a steel wool scrubby pad in lox and it'll go FOOSH with a spark) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SmSGZhX3zE

I'd probably want to always use the auto on feature, with a few good deep breaths to pull room air into the thing before it starts (almost said 'fires up')

Respironics part #302418. Official name is pressure valve.

You can purchase a device that you plug into the wall socket and it has two types of female sockets. One goes to the cpap machine and when the cpap machine turns on (using ac amperage) that flow triggers a relay to provide power to the 'switched' outlet which would go to your O2 machine. So the use of the cpap device turns on the O2 circuit and also turns it off. Here is a link to one example. There are many varieties. The come in 110/220 versions to control large central vacuums when a dust producing wood working tool begins operation.

That would presume that the O2 unit didn't use a on off switch, I've never seen one that didn't require moving a switch or button. Nothing can beat the fickle finger of fate, to push a switch. Jim

The OP has his concentrator in a different room so with this would need extension cord in addition to O2 tubing running from room to room.
