My Last Chance

Post by ajnitti » Wed Jun 21, 2006 12:36 pm

This is my last chance in correcting my mouth breathing. In the last month I purchased 2 chin straps as well as a Mirage swift and mirage activa mask. I taped my mouth but I had a severe reaction to adhesive. My last chance my therapist advises is a full face mask. I am going today to get one, any recommendations in reference to a full face mask would be great.

My vote is for the Ultra Mirage FF from Resmed. It is the only mask I have used and I really have no reason to find another one to try. It has worked well for me since day one.

The UMFF pushed too hard on my jaw. But I have no molars (of my own),
and I can't get the F&P HC431 to seal well where the teeth arent. However,
I'm still trying to find a FF that works for me....may be the Hybrid?

I'll second that second Wulfman gave for the UMFF. One thing to realize though with the measurement system on cpap.com is that if your length measurement (measurement #5) is close to being the next size up (say within 1/8 inch) you should consider going to that next size. Reason being is that the measurement is taken with your mouth closed. If you are mouth breathing your mouth is open making this measurement inaccurate.

Doing my measurements using the cpap.com sizing information showed that with my mouth closed (length 3 & 7/8 inch) I needed a medium but with my mouth in a relaxed state (length 4 inch). This 1/8 inch difference resulted in the sizing tool to recommend a large.

I agree with DVL on the size thing, too. My measurement ended up being right on the line between medium and large......I chose the large and was glad I did.

I was given an F&P HC431 which doesn't seal well on my face. I ended up going to the smaller insert rather than the larger to get a better seal but using that mask is definately temporary.

I found out today, that they also tried the HC431 on me during my sleep study (was the 2nd mask they tried) and it also didn't work well.

They then switched to a comfortfull full mask (med) which appears to be held to gether differently. That mask worked great.

I've had the DME order the comfortfful and I went ahead and purchased a Comfortful 2 from cpap.com that should be here tomorrow.

The way the head gear attaches is different with the comfortfull coming directly behind the head. I think that allows the mask to be better aligned.

Most of the leaks were from my cheek area rather than my chine which I had expected (I have a beard). But the chin was fine.

yeah, i definitely like the comfortfull 2, it works better than the ff431 does, i also have the resmed mirage series 2, but out of all three the comfortfull works for me the best.

My Last Chance

Post by ajnitti » Thu Jun 22, 2006 10:22 am

Thanks Everyone:

I purchased the mirage full face mask (#3 mask since 5/17/06 ) from my therapist yesterday $240.00. He advised in size medium, I got to tell you It's a little acquired to get used to. I had pressure on the bridge of my nose and a little air was escaping near my eyes. I corrected the air leak near my eyes but it seems the air is tickling parts of my face, which is making pull the mask off, also i noticed rainout in the mask. I am going to try to rectify some of these issues over the weekend. any advice would be great.

I was kind of in the same boat when I started. I did everything I could to NOT have to wear a full face mask. The first one my DME provider gave me was an UMFF. As others have said, it did pretty good. But after a while, I had to switch because it was rubbing the bridge of my nose.

That's when i got a F&P 431. That mask has done better for me than the UMFF. I still get lines along each side of my nose, but those are much better than the sore caused by the UMFF. At this point, I use the 431 most of the time and if I want or need to change the mask for a night or two, I go back to the UMFF.

At present, I'm trying to get a Hans Rudolph 7600 to work. I'm hoping that a non-ridged mask won't leave marks as bad as the other two (but I'm sure it will to some degree). I've been lucky in the regard that my DME provider has been working hard to find the best mask possible for me. Sometimes I feel that I'm wearing their patience thin, but I'm thankful they're committed to helping me. I'm also lucky my insurance is there to pick up the tab... otherwise, I don't know if I would have shelled the money out of pocket to try all these different masks... thus I probably would have given up on my therapy by now. It really is a shame that there's no "try before you buy" program out there for this equipment.

Found a solution to the F&P 431 last night... a temporary solution that will work until the other mask arrives..

I found that if using my hand, pressed the mask back against my face at the center of the mask (just above the air inlet), I had a great seal.

Was a bit hard against my face, but it was a very good seal.

The head straps however, don't have that type of directional control.

As a last resort, I used a small belt ( looks more like a scarf) and tied it around the back of my head just above the inlet and tightend it a bit.

It created a solid seal and didn't move while I slept.

I had lines on my face in the morning, but at least I wasn't playing with the mask all night long.

My wife made a comment this morning that I looked like a very confused Nija fighter...

New mask arrives today... Comfortfull 2...
