Question/Advice - Severe OSA

Post by suev1209 » Mon Nov 10, 2014 1:47 pm

Hello all - i am a 53 year old woman diagnosed with severe sleep apnea in December, 2010 with readings that I think are pretty high. My apnea was 87.8, with a lowest Sa02 level of 78.0 and my machine setting is 14. It was quite an adjustment getting use to the machine - I had been a stomach sleeper, but I have adjusted and now will not sleep without my machine. I'm trying to get a replacement machine so that I have a backup and wanted advice. The machine I currently have is a Resmed Escape and a Mirage Quatro Full Face mask, which was partially paid by my insurance. Since I was diagnosed I have not regularly seen the doctor, had any additional sleep tests or adjustments to the machine. My insurance normally requires 5 years on a machine so I may have to pay - but I really want a back-up (plus I probably have a million hours on mine - it is very well used). It has been a reliable machine but does not give any records of apenas, leaks or any of the other data that I think would be very helpful. I am a mouth sleeper with a very small nose and sometimes deal with leakage at the top of the nose which I attribute to a small nose and high setting. If anyone is in a similar situation and can recommend a machine and or mask it would be greatly appreciated. I have recently lost about 35 pound and hope to continue getting healthier and want to be sure my settings aren't higher than they need to be. What would the benefit be of an Auto Pap vs. a Cpap? I like the looks of the S9 Auto Set because it's pink and I'm girly (LOL), but am trying to be practical. Also, how often is typical to go for re-checks? I'm not sure if I need another sleep study or just an ENT visit. Thanks in advance! Sue

There's a newer ResMed model line now than the S9 line. Called the AirSense 10 model line.
If you can afford it (since you will be paying for it on your own anyway) I would suggest looking at the AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her.

I think it is always nice to have apap mode available even if it isn't needed at the moment.....it might be needed later.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Plus this new "for Her" model has a special apap mode that might be even more useful for women.
So it has cpap mode...regular apap mode (like the S9 has) and the for her apap mode....so like 3 machines in one.

If money is tight one can always maybe look at the S9 AutoSet or shop for gently used model at secondwindcpap.com.

I haven't seen my sleep doc in over 5 years now. I don't feel there is any need at this time. Nothing he can offer at the moment that I can't do for myself.

There seem to be a lot of good S9 Autosets coming onto the market as the A10 launches. I just got a great one with everything for about $500.

I specifically wanted two identical machines.
