Do the straps from headgear squeeze the Carotid artery?

Post by JimP » Sat Nov 08, 2014 7:18 am

Not sure if I'm just being a bit paranoid, but given how I and I assume other have to tighten their headgear, it would seem that the straps are applying pressure to the carotid artery reducing bloodflow to the brain.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

Your carotids are not affected as they are on the sides of your neck and not the back, and even if pressure was direct, it would have to be very pronounced before it would matter. Carotid problems come from plaque build up inside the arteries, not from outside.

Your headgear may be adjusted too tight, or may even be the wrong size for you.
I would maybe avoid any sensitive points.

Here is an illustration of the location of the right carotid. It is near the back of the jaw and a properly adjusted chinstrap will be all the way to the front. So all it good to go.

headgear, not chinstrap.

Sorry about the typo of using the term Chinstrap instead of headgear.
In any even, the Amara mask has a horizontal strap that runs along the jaw line and around the back of the head.
So, since the carotid runs up the neck as shown in the illustration and inside of the jaw line, the Amara headgear can't put any significant pressure on the carotid. Still good to go.

Thanks for posting.

Does the Carotid go inside the jaw line or is it on the surface. I can't tell from the image.

Not on the surface, but diagonally. Google Images should give you lots of pix.

arteries are always pretty deep in the structure of the body, veins are typically close to the surface.

all those snakelike things you see on muscular peoples arms and legs and torso? veins.

Just a remote possibility, but flesh under a tight strap may be quite uncomfortable.
