I was diagnosed with OSA last month. In order to get my sleep study I went to my primary care doctor for my yearly physical. While I was there I mentioned that I was often tired throughout the day, and that my wife had mentioned that I sometimes made choking sounds in my sleep. My doctor then scheduled a sleep study for me at the local hospital's sleep medicine center. The results came back along with a recommendation for a CPAP at 10 cm H2O, and that is exactly what I now have.
My question is how do I find a sleep specialist? Or do I even need to? I suppose I can always talk to my doctor if I feel that my current therapy isn't optimal, but I don't know how much he can help in that regard. I monitor my data religiously, and my AHI is under 5, but my RDI isn't I have a fair number of RERAs most nights, and wouldn't mind bringing those down a bit.
Thanks!

Re: Finding a sleep doctor
Hi, many of us haven't seen doctors for OSA in years, possibly since diagnosis, partly because we track our own progress as you're apparently doing (if it ain't broke... ) and because we get so much help from this forum for just about anything that might come up related to sleep problems and therapy/Cpap/other answers. If you feel good on Cpap and your numbers are stable, what is there to bring to a specialist? Keep your GP up to date so there's a record for you, but otherwise?

Re: Finding a sleep doctor
I got a sleep doc because my PCP would not write a prescription for supples or another machine,
and I really wanted to change from cpap to apap.
I keep him because I like him and don't mind going in once a year.
This way I have a relationship in case things go south.

Re: Finding a sleep doctor
I was given a referral to a sleep doctor from my family doctor. The sleep doctor referred me to the sleep center for a test, and then the sleep doctor prescribed the machine and did a one-month follow up and another appointment for next year.VictorC wrote: My question is how do I find a sleep specialist? So you could ask your family doctor for a referral. Or you could check your insurance plan for sleep doctors in-network. Usually they're respiratory MDs - same folks who deal with narcolepsy, asthma, and pulmonary hypertension.
