AirSence 10

Post by barnabas » Sun Oct 12, 2014 9:26 am

I had a problem with a NEW ResMed AirSence Auto 10 blowing too much pressure, possible malfunction. It was like a bomb going off in the night. Air blew out all around the ResMed Quattro full mask, I had to pull it off. It felt like my lungs blew up. The unit has the pressure relief set at 1. Has anyone seen this? I don't dare to use it now.

Relax, where did you get it? Is this your first night? Do you have your sleep study results?
--or did somebody just throw this stuff at you?
You reaction is not uncommon, as few patients have proper support, but you have found it here.
Register and provide us will all the info you can.

The machine, air mask, heated tube and humidifier were prescribed by my doctor from results of a hospital sleep Apnea test. The machine and all the related stuff was supplied and setup by a professional including training me on the system. The pressure ramp is set for 45 minutes to get to prescribed pressure, pressure relief's lowest setting of 1, humidifier is at mid range 4 (85% humidity), the heated tube is set at 80 deg F. The problem was not a panic attack, I was sound asleep when it happened, sure woke me up fast!! It was the third night with the machine. The sleep reports show 7 to 10 events per hour even when using the machine.
Thanks for the reply.

Use the software to see exactly what the pressure was doing.
SleepyHead will work that machine. Links in my signature line.
If it really went wild...it will show up on the software reports.
If you are using a range of pressures it's possible the machine thought you needed higher pressures...it will all show up on the reports though.

I find it highly unlikely that the machine malfunctioned.

however, feel free to import the data from the sd card, graph it with sleepyhead and post the details here.

more likely you just developed a big leak and it *seemed* like you had a problem.

the machines can't generate damaging pressures... even if they 'malfunction'.

You need to slow down, take a deep breath and count to ten.
Now, please fill out your profile so we all know which machine, mask and hose you are using.

Next tell what your sleep study report said including AHI, Obstructive and Central break down and prescribed pressure.

Then tell us what your machine settings actually are.

If you can download and install Sleepyhead 0.9.8-1 current version and post 1 or 2 days detailed reports, then we will be able to help you understand what is happening and suggest some solutions.

Many of us have been through what you are going through now. It will get better if you keep at it.

My previous S9 Autoset woke me up with excess pressure a couple times when I had the upper pressure set to max (20)
My current range (see below) prevents this from happening, which is why I set the new machine at the same numbers.
Supposedly, the machine will not provide runaway pressures--but it still can happen to some of us.

I think I need to find out more about the site, I am hearing new things / software/ etc. I don't have any software and the machine setup limits what it will let me do. The hospital did not give me a copy of sleep tests. They did have trouble getting air pressure set to where I could breath.
When I registered I did not see how to setup my account for M/F or what machine I have.

My present prescription is for 12 CM H2O. When the bad situation occurred it was not just some air that blew out around the mask. Two days later my chest and lungs are still sore. The air blast lasted about 10 seconds. The machine seemed to work ok after removing and reinstalling.

Seriously, these machines are incapable of the pressure you describe.
I suspect your chest muscles are sore from breathing more deeply than you are used to.
I repeat, there is NO way the cpap can "blow out" your lungs.
It is impossible. They use cpap on premature babies!

Welcome to the board.

Check the links in my signature line for information on how to get the SleepyHead program to download your data. It will also help you check what the pressure settings are on your machine.

I'm not sure what the maximum pressure the machine would blow if the pressure sensor or computer malfunctioned and the fan blew as hard as is can. Unless it's broken, it won't blow enough air pressure to actually damage your lungs unless you have a pre-existing condition.
