Leaking mask when changing position at night.

Post by Valkyria » Sun Oct 12, 2014 4:47 am

New to this place so hello everybody. I just found out that I have severe apnea, apparently with 60 episodes/hour of sleep. I just started using my CPAP machine (4nights ago) i already finding that i have more energy and are less tired and best of all i haven't woken up with my hands asleep x times per night since thursday yay, So thats positive. I wanted to ask the old timers here if masks are leaking more easily if you sleep in special positions? Im going to go back to my supplier tomorrow to see if i can try a size bigger nose mask to see if that makes a difference. I fall asleep fine with a none leaking mask, I wake up during the night with the mask moved and leaking and me having to move it back. I have always been a restless sleeper so mask or no mask, i flip from side to back to stomach, well you get the picture.

Your face changes a lot when you lie down, and then again depending on what position you're in, so yes, the mask may leak more obviously in certain positions (back sleeping especially) than otherwise. You can either tighten it more (not recommended for various reasons), or try a mask liner like Pad-a-Cheek, or a different mask, but most will behave differently depending on how you're sleeping. You're better off not to sleep on your back in any case as it provokes more apneas.

Are the leaks bad? What are the leak rates?

If you are that restless at night you are going to have leaks....you can try the mask liners and/or try a buckwheat hull pillow. If your leaks are minor they will not affect your therapy. The machine can compensate for minor leaks.

You might look into some sort of hose management system as sometimes keeping the hose up and away from the head allows for more movement with less drag or potential for the mask moving too much with frequent movement.
I toss and turn a lot but I rarely have my nasal pillow mask come dislodged...part of it is a matter of properly fitting nasal pillows (and I used the Swift FX you are showing) and getting the strap tension just right to limit movement.

Your bed pillow is also something to look at...some pillows just push on masks more than others especially with side sleeping or stomach sleeping. There are special cpap pillows with the sides having cut outs for mask to rest in and on.
Pricey but what I would suggest is for someone to go to a discount store like WalMart and buy a cheap Walmart memory foam pillow and cut out your own holes and see if you like the idea first before spending the big bucks.

I prefer a buckwheat hull pillow myself. It allows me the firmness my neck needs but I can make a nest for the mask to rest in so the pressure doesn't cause the mask to move.

If you are using the Swift FX nasal pillow...it shouldn't move much if you have the right size nasal pillow and the proper tension with the straps if the hose isn't pulling on it or bed pillow doesn't push on the mask too much.
Have you watched the fitting videos available to make sure you have it fitted properly?

Hose management...can be store bought or DIY. Here's some DIY ideas.

You might want to try placing the hose under the covers so it moves with you as you move during the night.

Thanks for your input, I realized tonight the mask is not actually leaking but rather getting dislodged so thinking it's the wrong size. Will go and change size today to see if it makes a difference

Are you using the Swift FX nasal pillow mask showing in your profile? If so they should have included 3 different sizes in the package and if they didn't they opened the package and removed what you and your insurance paid for.
All the Swift FX nasal pillow complete mask setups come with 3 different sizes.
If you are using a different mask..then maybe it didn't have alternate sizes in the packaging.

I ended up using the sleepweaver cloth mask. After testing a lot of masks this is the only one that has acceptable leaks for me. I also toss and turn, sleep on my back, side, and stomach. Since the mask is cloth and inflates like a pillow it adjusts to the changing positions for me very well. Every other mask i tried became dislodged when I wnet to my side, or even worse my stomach.

the other thing a lot of people find helpfull is a cpap pillow, it has space for the mask........ did not help me but has helped many.

I'm going to talk about the pillow that Pugsy has. Man, I'm going to sound like a terrible product shill (remember Ronco?), mostly because I already recommended this pillow a couple times last week, including once again today. Granted,I got a free prototype of this buckwheat pillow to test last month from member SleepGuy, however, rest assured I would NEVER EVER recommend anything that didn't work for me. Here's the link to the product page and also my recent review:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Thanx for all your input, I'm lucky enough to be able to try the different mask types before buying any. My cpap provider gave me a "nose mask" with headgear to see if this fits better. (Sorry forgot to get brand.) Seems it my very long shiny hair that is the biggest problem when it comes to the mask.
