cpap and cataract surgery

Post by Bons » Wed Oct 08, 2014 1:45 pm

My nasal mask always leaks a tad of air toward my eye. On Monday I will have a cataract removed. I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to go without the ASV for a couple of nights until the incision heals a bit. My AHI isn't a whole lot lower ON the ASV than OFF the ASV (it was 9 at diagnosis and still hovers around 5), so it's unlikely that I will have any disastrous outcomes during a short-time lay-off.

Any ideas?

After the surgery, they will give you a plastic eye shield to be taped over the eye to protect it while you sleep. I don't recall how many days you sleep with it, but it's more than one.

I think that shield is worn at night only for a week after you visit the doctor the next day after surgery and then they tell you to use the patch/shield that they routinely give to cataract patients.
At least that was the procedure my husband had with both eyes.
Surgery on one eye one day...patched at the surgicenter..told to leave it on until the next day when they do the post op visit and they remove that patch and tell you to wear the shield/patch (our doc dispenses a little kit that contains the shield and tape) for 1 week at night. It's mainly so you don't inadvertently bump the eyeball with something or someone elbows you in the eyeball.

That shield should block any air that might leak out of the mask towards the eyeball.
It's kinda of a hard plastic shield...or maybe it was lightweight aluminum...definitely firm and not a cloth shield.

The plastic shields we received after cararact surgery are perforated. If you get that type, it might be helpful to place tape over the hokes and to use the tape to seal the lower edge nearest to the mask edge to prevent any air from impinging on the eye. That should be fine for a week or so while you need to wear the shield at night.

Don't cover the perforations without checking with your MD as to whether it could be a problem for your eyes.

I also wouldn't cover those holes without checking with the doctor first. I think they are there for a reason in the shields.
What little leak that might make it to the shield on the outside is going to get a serious deflection by just the shield itself and if the leak is bad enough to get through those little holes in any great quantity then the leak is too big anyway. Would be doubtful that a person could sleep through a big leak like that.
Between your eyelids being closed anyway while you are asleep and the shield...a small leak shouldn't be a problem.

When you go for your post op visit have them show you how to apply the tape to secure the shield in a manner that seals the outer area of the shield so nothing will sneak in under the shield.
Explain your concerns and they will show you the best way to secure it and answer any questions you might have.

I would take the mask with you to your next appointment. It should not be a problem. It might be helpful to talk about the issue before the surgery so that you or the driver you take with you are more likely to remember what was decided as you may be too drugged up to remember afterwards.

Different doctors have different procedures. generally they do one eye at a time, but some do both. I had tape and a pad over each eye the first night. then after the follow up, I just wore an eye patch from Walmart at night. An aunt told me she was not patched had both eyes done but could have taken it off and lied about it.

I was not on CPAP at the time.

I had cataract surgery a year ago. I didn't have any trouble with air blowing on my eye. Your mileage may vary. Consult your own physician.

I love my bionic eye.
