New Need Advice on CPAP

Post by teemars » Sat Oct 04, 2014 9:03 am

I have just had a sleep study done and it was determined that I need a CPAP. Talking with the sleep therapist he said the doctor is going to have to call a company that sales the CPAP with the RX and I will then be able to get my CPAP. He said the Dr. would prescribe a Phillips Respironics System One Pro with Cflex, heated tubing and smart card. Is this a good CPAP? Is there anything I need to look for when I go pick the CPAP up? Do I have a say in what CPAP I want or do I have to go with what the Dr. said? I was also told that I would have to pick a mask anything I need to look at when choosing a mask?

Most likely that would be the new 60 series machine model 460

and this humidifier

Make sure the hose has a black end on it where it attaches to the humidifier...that is needed to make it a heated hose opposed from standard non heated hose.

It's a full data machine....you can use SleepyHead or Encore software.
The only down side to this model is the lack of full time apap mode (auto adjusting pressures) which sometimes comes in handy. It DOES have apap mode available but it is limited to 30 days (but I know how to get you repeated 30 days up to 5 times unless they have changed things).

Masks.....can you normally breathe through your mouth just fine or do you have significant nasal congestion issues that prevent you from breathing only through your nose?

If you can normally breathe through your nose just fine....go with as minimal mask as you can...nasal pillow mask is the most minimal. If nasal pillows freak you out then maybe a nasal cushion mask.

The ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillows or Resmed's Swift FX nasal pillows would be good masks for a newbie.
In the nasal cushion line...the ResMed Swift FX Nano cushion would be a good starting mask.

If you simply can't breathe through your nose well....then you need a full face mask...I don't have any experience with full face masks but maybe the ResMed AirFit F10 full face mask. It seems to be getting very good reviews from most users.

Mask preferences are highly individual and there's no guarantee that a mask that works well for one person will work with the next person. It's just the way it is with masks...you have to try them yourself and figure out what works well for your on needs.

I am sure I will need a full face mask. Should I ask for the auto cpap?

Your prescription is already set for an auto machine... nothing to do with the mask, so you need to try various masks on - lying down (your face changes a lot when you lie down) - so that you find the right size, right fit, etc. for you, in a 'full face' type.

I would insist on an auto machine, the PRS 560TS with heated hose. The heated hose option also requires an 80 watt power supply instead of the standard 60 watt. Read as much as you can here at the top of the forum, then double check every component to be sure it is what you want.
And don't give the DME your credit card info. Some of them have a bad habit of charging it indiscriminately even when you're insurance pays for everything.

Mask preference or needs has nothing to do if whether someone might need an apap capable machine.
A potential reason for finding apap auto adjusting pressures useful....pressure needs can vary significantly between supine sleeping and side sleeping or REM stage sleep vs non REM sleep.
It's common to need more pressure during REM sleep or when sleeping on our backs (and sometimes we simply can't stay on our side).
I have that issue but with REM sleep. In REM sleep I might need 18 or 19 cm...but in non REM sleep I might only need 10 or 11. It's much nicer letting the machine go to 18 for short periods of time while I am asleep than it would be for me to have to use 18 cm all night long.

You may or may not have similar issues with pressure needs varying but it's nice to have the apap availability just in case.

What do you mean by that? The PRS1 Pro is a manual CPAP.

Teemars, the PRS1 Pro is a good machine. An auto CPAP would be better and costs the same, but many doctors have their heads stuck in the last century and don't understand auto CPAP. The auto would be better, but the PRS1 Pro will probably work fine.

There's a lot of information in the links in my signature line for newbies.
