How to keep one's mouth shut (literally)

Post by JSG » Thu Sep 25, 2014 6:54 pm

Well, I just got my 4th mask, and this one is of the full facial variety. Today I tried taking a nap, and my jaw gaped open so wide that the mask seal was broken. I've tried chin straps before, but they're horribly uncomfortable, and taping one's mouth is even worse. (I tried it.) Anyone have a comfortable solution to this?

What's your humidity setting?
Do you do nasal cleansing (so you can breathe through your nose) before you mask up?

I don't... my mouth is open a lot when I sleep. Use a FFM mask but even then, some let you do that some dont.

With the Quattro Air, if I open my mouth it is a problem.
With the F&P 432, it doesn't matter.

Use a soft cervical collar to keep your jaw up. Chinstraps do that but also move your jaw slightly backwards increasing the likelihood of increases in OSA events, hypopneas etc.
With a FFM all that is needed is support of the jaw so that the mask seal is not disturbed.

Poli-grip strips--just make sure you use the ones that are zinc-free.
Cut one in half so you can place them so the only space is a little gap in the center.
Lick your lips and lay them in, pressing lips firmly together.
you can still breathe through the gap, but it's awkward.
It's a bit gooey in the morning, but peels off fairly easily.

Thanks, guys. I like the Polident idea, but I wake at least two times during the night to drink some water, because my mouth is all pasty, even though I have the humidifier cranked up. The cervical collar is an intriguing idea, though; I never thought to use that for anything other than if I got into a car accident.

That's why. You need to turn your HH setting DOWN......WAY DOWN.
Too much warm humid air can contribute to nasal congestion which in turn contributed to mouth breathing......even in a full face mask. Also, try to train your tongue to stay on the roof of your mouth while you're sleeping.

I've been doing this bike cuff strap for a long time and it works great with no discomfort, unlike most chinstraps:

Here's a description of how it's done. If you have any questions PM me and I'll give you answers.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
