They go on automatically when you start therapy. You can turn the dial to adjust humidity level.

If you want to preheat the humidifier beforehand, you can press and hold the dial down with therapy mode selected. After a few seconds the blue heater light should come on, but the blower will remain off.

If the humidifier is attached but is not turning on despite the above operations being performed, it may be disabled in the clinical menu (press the ramp button and then the dial button down and hold for 5 seconds to access).

You do need to have the heated hose for it to work.

Now using AirFit F10 mask; Quattro Air is backup mask. RemZzzz mask liners with both.

The OP mentions a VPAP type of cpap that can't be a Series 60 Respironics added as a comment in her profile.
Perhaps the subject line is in error. I don't know how to manage the humidifier in that system.
Humidifier: HumidAire 2i™ Heated Humidifier
Additional Comments: resmed vpap adapt sv
Her choice of the Humidaire 2i indicates an S7 machine. Something is certainly incorrect here.

silly me, I figured OP was asking for a friend, or had just gotten a new machine.

The heated hose is only needed if the air coming to the mask needs to be warmer.
The heater element to the humidifier heating plate will work without a heated hose and with the 60 series machines there's 2 humidity options with a regular non heated hose. Classic Mode and the new system one humidification mode (that's the default if no heated hose is attached). All of this is explained in the manual.
