OT: Sleep Apnea/Costco/and Food
I posted this in a thread that morphed from "FDA CPAP Mask RX-only Enforcement Poll" to Walmart, Costco and then to food (as Den suggested) seems to happen around here. I find it interesting that not one person commented on this post:
"Yes, they still have the sauer kraut and yes, the hot dogs are out of this world and yes, still $1.59 ~ tho I haven't had one in years. I try to stay away from the pizza also and usually get the salad with turkey, fresh tomatoes, fresh everything really. For $3.99 it's quite a bargain.
Now... here is my question. If one is bound and determined to faithfully use the machine every single night and swears that it is keeping your organs happy and healthy, and then goes ahead and eats a hot dog or sausage or pizza at Costco, what is the point?? I'm flabbergasted - doesn't make a bit of sense to me. That junk is gonna kill you just as fast as not using your machine and maybe faster!"
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=100426&start=45
I want to clarify that like most people I love junk food, especially ice cream. But, since learning that I had SA in 2011, I have made an attempt to cut out junk food. Sure, once in awhile I give in and have ice cream or some type of junk, but rarely. It just doesn't make any sense to eat a huge bowl of chocolate chip ice cream and then slap the mask on my face.
It appears that many of you think it's okay to eat junk food as long as you faithfully use the machine every single night. Sort of counter productive, don't you think? It's fascinating really and a subject I think worth discussing.

Adults make choices. Food is as much about fuel as it is about emotion and social issues. None of the items mentioned are totally junk food or problematic if not eaten every day. If you eat "healthy food " for the rest of the week one binge while on the run won't hurt you unless it is contaminated or contains allergens you should be avoiding.ems wrote: Now... here is my question. This time I will reply by saying it is OK for people to do whatever the hell they want to do as long as they are not infringing on the rights of others.
I'm assuming this goes for using your machine as well?

Since it's apparently MY fault for this separate thread, let me offer a reply.
Do you want "serious" or "tongue-in-cheek"? Maybe I'll try both.
Actually, I think I've been eating healthier in the last 9+ years since I've been on CPAP therapy. Having T2 Diabetes is also a factor in that, too......discovered that at the same time as my OSA. Trying to educate myself (and my "cook") on both has helped, too.
But.......other than the blood sugar, my blood draws look pretty decent......I have no LDL cholesterol problems (almost non-existent). Some of the things that were a little out of range at that time are now "in range". So, I think I'm making progress.
On the other hand.......and now for the opposing view........I'm not going to completely change my diet, become a vegan or some such thing. We're all going to die some day form some thing. The obituaries are full of the people I've known. I MAY live longer, but to live a lifestyle that is not the way I want to live, is not the way I'm going to live my life. It may SEEM like I'll live longer, but if it's not doing what I like to do, then it ain't worth it. To live a LONG time is not necessarily worth it if you are only "existing" and not "living". On the other hand, I've been told I'm a really boring person.

I agree with you. However, I don't mean the occasional indulgence. I think many here eat what most would consider junk but then slap their mask on every nite.BlackSpinner wrote:Adults make choices. Same thing with smoking. Folks smoke all their life, when it catches up with them, they want Obama (socialized medicine) to bail them out.

first that a quality hotdog or pizza at costco is automatically "junk food" (bread, meat, veggies... ) or that just because one chooses to indulge in something that's inexpensive and tastes good and is convenient, in some way negates their striving to get rest and oxygen at night.
you might as well whip up a just as specious argument about how you can't believe that people fathfully use the machine every night and then indulge in the russian roulette of getting in a car and going somewhere, putting themselves in great danger of being maimed, or killed.... how could they waste the time with cpap and then take such foolhardy risks? tens of thousands of people are killed, and even more maimed every year!
but, maybe it's just me thinking that.

Re: OT: Sleep Apnea/Costco/and Food
I guess I'm confused as to what "junk food" really is and the frequency one is "allowed" to consume it.
Most food has good things in it. I don't think everybody eats "unhealthy food" every day.
I can count on one hand the number of times we eat out (or fast food) in a year. Sit-down restaurants included.
I've read and heard that the new mandates in trying to make the school lunches healthier is now resulting in a phenomenal WASTE of food (being thrown out). Another O'Failure.
The "food police" and the nitwits behind all that need to be taken out behind the barn......

Basically, I agree with you. However, if we're all going to die of "something" and we are relatively healthy now, why bother with this annoying mask? I'm not trying to start an argument... just trying to figure this out myself.

Don't know if it's going to help me live longer, but I don't want to go back to the way I felt before therapy. I never said "I want to die sooner" than necessary. But, whatever I can do to increase my longevity (within reason) and still enjoy some of this life is the route I plan to take.ems wrote:My blood draw is much like yours... also slightly high blood sugar but meds aren't necessary. You have got to be kidding!! You think that Costco sells a quality hot dog??? There isn't any such thing as a "quality" hot dog... except maybe a turkey dog and I'm not fond of those.palerider wrote:
