Dry cough, stuffed nose
Ok, was wondering if anyone had issues with dry coughing or congestion? I've been using my machine for the past month or so, no problems except for recently, maybe a week ago, had to take mask off because I was coughing and chest was congested. I don't have a fever, not short on breath or physically tired, just a dry cough. Have thought it may be allergies which is my strongest suspicion. My eye is bloated up like a bad sty today, pretty puffy, clogged nose and cough comes and goes. I have NOT been using the water for humidifier, so I'm checking into that, put my setting at 2 for that and will try it before I go to work tonight.
Pretty scary stuff, have tried antihistimenes like allegra but no dice. I can't shake it. Do you think its lack of using humidifier?

Do you take Lisinopril? It's a known "dry cough" contributor.aav amphibs wrote:Ok, was wondering if anyone had issues with dry coughing or congestion? I don't know why you haven't been using the humidifier, but even with water in it and no heat may help things. It's called "passover" (cool-heat turned off) humidification. I've been using that method since I started therapy over nine years ago. It also helps to keep the nasal passages open. Doing nasal cleansing to be able to breathe through the nose before bedtime helps.

WHOA. You hit it right on the nose. YES, I do have Lisinopril for high blood pressure. I've been on it for about a month or so. I just went to the doctor this week, he prescribed me another med to go along with it, but haven't had it yet. I gotta call the stupid MEDCO mail order ripoff pharmacy. WOW, you hit it. Maybe that's a situation eh? I use nasal cleaning but believe me, it helps only for the moment. This cough and sneezing comes and goes which makes me believe its allergies compounded by not using the water in the machine. Ok, I'm going to see how that humidifier works, got it set to number 2 for starters, I guess I'll play around with it a little. Maybe too I'll need to dump this medication? Too bad, just ordered a bunch more.Wulfman... wrote:Do you take Lisinopril? Some alternatives to Lisinopril are Diovan (Valsartan) or Cozaar (Losartan). I tried Lisinopril over nine years ago and had violent coughing.......I've taken both Diovan and am currently on Losartan. No problems with them.
I can't begin to tell you how many CPAP users experience the dry cough with Lisinopril. It's mind-boggling.

I really do appreciate that tip. Thank you! Lisinopril going to get flushed down the commode yesterday. Tried APAP with water, MUCH MUCH better. No stuffed nose. Still coughing though. I took a LISINOPRIL yesterday but NO MORE now. I'll do without blood pressure medicine before I take that crap again. I have an ICON Auto Pap.Wulfman... wrote:Some alternatives to Lisinopril are Diovan (Valsartan) or Cozaar (Losartan). I try to stick with the GENERIC pills because it only cost me 5 bucks. I'll write these names down and see if they have a generic version without crazy side effects. Thanks again. SUPER thanks.

Thanks, but that's too much work. I'll just mention it in my future strings. For now, I have an ICON APAP machine with data information has a humidifier.archangle wrote:Please fill in the equipment on your profile. It will help us figure out your problems. Re: Dry cough, stuffed nose
Generic means that it is the same as the original product, so you want something different (even if a generic). As Wulfman said, there are alternatives to lisinopril that your doc should consider. There are many drugs that help to reduce blood pressure. Losing weight through diet and exercising, which is the best method of treating high blood pressure in the long term, will also help. Don't suddenly stop the blood pressure medication, though, especially if you have been taking it for a while.aav amphibs wrote:I really do appreciate that tip. Thank you! Re: Dry cough, stuffed nose
You're right but in this case, I'd rather take my chances with not taking this medication when I have these terrible side effects than to keep on taking them. I'll have to go back to the doctor and re-prescribe some better meds. As soon as possible of course.
Re: Dry cough, stuffed nose
I was on lisinopril for close to ten years, with the dry unproductive cough. My new doc said she had seen dozens of patients with the complaint when using lisinopril. I was changed to losartan about a year ago, with no improvement in the cough. Unfortunately, the losartan made no difference for me. The intensity and frequency of cough have decreased somewhat with CPAP, however, and my sinusitis and post nasal drip has improved dramatically after only a couple of months. I'm hoping the cough will continue to improve as well.Wulfman... wrote:Some alternatives to Lisinopril are Diovan (Valsartan) or Cozaar (Losartan). Re: Dry cough, stuffed nose
I've been on benicar, taz tia, don't recall any coughs with those, just this one Lisiprol. No way do I want to live with this type of cough.
Re: Dry cough, stuffed nose
I'm on Benicar, plus two other BP meds and have no cough issues. Replaced amlodipine and much less grogginess.
