Wheezing from CPAP

Post by milwaukeemarshall » Thu Sep 04, 2014 11:30 am

I have been using a CPAP for 4 years and since 2 years ago I developed wheezing and asthmatic symptoms. I never had asthma growing up and wanted to know if anyone else experienced wheezing with prolonged CPAP use?
NOTE: I recently switched insurance and will be getting a new CPAP machine after 3 years. I am wondering if moving from the ResMed S9 to the latest model will help.

No problems here. Been on the cpap machine for a little over 5 years now. No asthma or lung issues at all. Not before or after starting therapy.

I know we like to blame either sleep apnea or the cpap machine for everything that goes wrong with our bodies and all our aches and pains...but maybe it's just life and the normal aging and the body just getting tired causing the problems

Of course with any change like you are having though with the respiratory system....see a doctor.

Also, sometimes re-evaluating your humidity settings or needs might be something that would be in order if lung issues are a problem.

If I sleep well and I keep my humidity low as usual, sometimes get "rebound" congestion and breathlessness in the early am but it only last an hour or so. I'm trying a little more humidity.

I doubt the S9 is your problem, I have the same machine.

See the doctor.
This requires more attention--ASAP!
2 years? Why have you not seen the doctor sooner?

Highly unlikely to be the result of CPAP use. You're breathing WITHOUT the machine for more hours during the day than with it. Do you clean/change the filters in the machine?
Also unlikely that a new machine will help either. But, go ahead and get one if it'll make you think it will (if you don't have a backup machine you need one anyway).

And, I agree with the others.......get to the doctor! What are you waiting for?

Yep. A pulmonologist visit is in order.

If anything, the filtered/humidified CPAP air should help lung problems.

Thanks for all the replies....a little more background may help.
I have seen my doctor and have been prescribed an inhaler for the symptoms and this is helping the issue. I wanted to know if anyone had had similar issues or have experienced the same as me.
In terms of the new machine, I moved locations and jobs which meant new insurance. There was a year lapse before I had new insurance from my new job after my relocation and I needed to get a new physician and sleep study doc. I also lost 50+ lbs from increased exercise and eating habits. So my new machine is because I had a new study done and there have been improvements in my results.
I appreciate the help and by no means was I blaming the CPAP for the wheezing....I was simply saying I never had asthma before the therapy. Someone mentioned filters and maybe this is a reason why I experienced wheezing. I did change and clean supplies regularly as well as replace but also...maybe it's just age.

Cpap therapy dramatically reduced my congestion and my asthma. Moving to Edmonton, a drier climate with less pollution (as long as the northern forests are not on fire) also reduced it some more.

Asthma can develop at any point in your life, it depends on what your breathing apparatus has been exposed to since you were born, where you live and your genetics, your hormones and your reactions to stress. Yes stress - I can give myself an asthma attacked just by being over stressed which is a truly PITA.

Maybe it's a difference in your environment. Did you also move to a different dwelling?
I also noticed that after I retired five years ago, some of the nasal congestion I was experiencing for years started clearing up. So, it made me wonder if there were more allergens in that area (about 50 miles from where I live).

I developed wheezing after 9 years of treatment, I went to the doctor, he prescribed two antibodics for a infection, cured in two weeks, I never had a infection hit so hard. XPAP makes my life better, age makes it worse. Jim
