silly question? on ffmask and humidifier?

Post by woozle » Mon Jun 12, 2006 8:16 pm

Hi all - love my swift but having major sinus inflammation - getting a CT scan on thursday as done 2 rounds of antibiotics and prednisone and major inflamation in sinuses -anyway - so in meantime ordered a ultra mirage full face mask that I received today, which I hope will relieve some pain - anyway, I tried to find this on research - but am wondering do you use the humidifier with a full face mask? I think I read somewhere but could not locate again that if you don't use the humidifier, your throat will be really sore in the morning? so ok to use humidifier? and think it would be ok to use a swimming plug thing on my nose so I don't breathe out of it at all (it really hurts). Am trying to stay compliant - as the option of not using the machine until this resolves is really not an option - was down to 75% on oxystat levels w/ no rem sleep at all when I don't use the cpap - thanks in advance for any advice!

When I had my sleep study with a full mask they used the heated humidity. I thought they could have cranked it up a bit.

My ordered machine is also with a full mask and heated humidity.

Monica:

You DEFINITELY use a heated humidifier with a full-face mask, as long as you have the heated humidifier. with your sinus infection or whatever, it should feel a lot better. play around with the dial on the humidifier and find the level that feels best. you also might feel better with a little vaseline or other non-irritating moisturizer in your nostrils, if you have any of that. it sounds like ayr gel or saline will burn the hell out of it in your condition. but yes, yes, you should feel a bit better with full face mask AND humidifier.

If you like a HH use it, I like mine cool, so I use my HH turned off with water in it. The idea of a FF Mask isn't so you don't breath through your nose. Breathing through your nose is the normal way things work. It's just that when our nose plugs, with a FF Mask, we have a option on breathing through our mouth, and we still get the needed pressure to keep out airway open.

Even with a FF Mask, when we breath through our mouths, our throat can dry out, the HH, turned on helps with that.

The main problem is without the FF Mask, if we breath through our mouth, we loose the air pressure we need to keep our airway open.

I use the FF Mask every nite, because failure isn't a option, and however much trouble it is to put up with, not breathing is worse.

Good Luck, you can do it, it's mind over matter. If you don't mind it doesn't matter. Jim

Good luck on the full face, Woozle.

About the swift and your recurrent infections: I think you have to take special care in cleaning your nasal pillows - when you have such infection.

I've read of people giving themselves recurrent strep throats because of using infected tooth brushes. I don't konw what it takes for bacteria to survive on nasasl pillows (Tomjax?) but maybe its' worth discussing it with your doctor.
