Anyone cruise with your CPAP on Royal Caribbean?
Anyone cruise with your CPAP on Royal Caribbean?
Going in a 7 night cruise with Royal Caribbean in September. One of the items listed as not being able to bring is an extension cord. Will the plug situation work? We have a bigger superior balcony room, if that makes a difference.

We went in April...The rules say that you should not use one unless it is approved.
I showed mine to the cabin attendant and he instantly approved it.
The attendant also noticed the CPAP machine and about an hour later, delivered a 1 gallon jug of distilled water to our room.
I brought my humdifier but barely needed it!
FYI... I needed every inch of the 8 foot extension cord and just about all of the resmed power brick to use my machine... The closest outlets were across the room from the bed.
While we were out of the room on the 1st day, the attendant taped the extension cord down onto the carpeting to avoid tripping over it during the trip.
have fun!

On my last cruise (Carnival) I asked the Cabin Steward and he brought about a 24 footer, long enough to go around the room along the walls from the vanity on one side to the night stand on the other.

Wow Dave, that's impressive service! Good to know (not that I'll be able to afford a cruise in this lifetime, but good to know anyway)

Seabourn Odyssey this past June, just out of a major interior update, and I needed an extension cord. Nobody seemed to care that I used my own, and very quickly, someone duct taped the cord to the carpet to prevent any tripping over it.
CPAP machines are commonplace on cruise ships.

Economics, age, amount of leisure time; poor sick people who can't afford pap usually can't afford a cruise either.
Just a combination of factors--you've kind of got to be close to poor to "get" it.

Simple demographics. I suspect that the prevalence of CPAP users is greater on longer cruises and more upscale cruise lines that tend to cater to a more "mature" clientele as opposed to Disney or carnival 5 day cruises. While many of the passengers on the latter mentioned cruise lines have sleep apnea, no doubt, they just haven't been diagnosed yet!Paralel wrote:How come?chunkyfrog wrote:One would tend to think so.
I have probably had sleep apnea for over 20 years (I sleep every night with a post-anesthesia unit nurse!) but my diagnosis was just made six months ago. Longer cruises= an older group with more retired people. More oppulent cruise lines usually also translates to an older demographic.

LOL! I keep forgetting I am not a spring chicken anymore. I am 40 and hubby 43. This is our 20th anniversary cruise! We are also doing 2 nights in San Juan, Puerto Rico before the cruise and 2 nights there after. (The cruise departs from San Juan.)RobertS975 wrote:Simple demographics. Would it be safe to buy a cord and leave it in the wrapping and put in my CPAP bag to take? I assume I won't need it in the hotel in San Juan. Would they look at it as part of my "medical device"? Do they look for the UL label?
Thanks for all the insight so far!

I'm probably just about as poor as they come, the only reason I can afford to have an xPAP is due to Obamacare.chunkyfrog wrote:...Just a combination of factors--you've kind of got to be close to poor to "get" it.

First, I would not make any assumptions.9forus wrote:I assume I won't need it in the hotel in San Juan. Would they look at it as part of my "medical device"? Do they look for the UL label?
Anything you need for your equipment can be put in the "medical device bag" including water whether for the cpap or to swallow meds. I also keep a power strip, AC power adapters (4 diff configs), enuff distilled for 3 days along with any & all medicines.
I honestly don't think they care about any UL label. They are too worried about how much toothpaste you have with you.
Also keep in mind that anything that is not allowed in carryon can be out in checked baggage, tho you would have to do that BEFORE you get to TSA.
ps. The power strip and/or AC adapters also come in handy when delayed in the airport and the need to charge or plug in a laptop, phone, etc. and all the outlets are in use - you can be the hero
Re: Anyone cruise with your CPAP on Royal Caribbean?
On the Aranui in February I plugged into the outlet at the nightstand. No extension cord needed. Several years ago on NCL, I ran an extension cord from the bathroom plug. The current was clean.

Re: Anyone cruise with your CPAP on Royal Caribbean?
Bring the extension cord and an outlet strip. Better to apologize and beg for forgiveness when they see it in use (if they care) than to not have the ability to use the cpap after lugging it with you and not enjoying the cruise as much as you can.

If you have forgotten the ext. cord, ask to borrow one.
These folks kind of want you to come back.
