Although . . .
Some might argue that when an assigned "task" involves suffering constant directed abuse in the form of psychological attacks from people misusing authority--such as by using words in a belittling way that can hit even harder than fists and shovels--there is no accepted and dignified way for the employed to "deal" with such "issues" of "adversity" without there being an arrangement in place for the dominated to be able to band together against the dominator(s). It's one school of thought, anyway. And that principle could be applied to masters who assign slaves impossible tasks involving puzzles of logic with no solution, such as in the form of completely contradictory protocols.
People who care about doing their work well but who are not given the tools by management to do that work well are in the impossible position of having to choose either to break the master's rules or to become part of the callously unjust treatment of customers and peers, by being uncaring. Some might argue that NOT having a stress response to that predicament could be considered inhumane, and more deeply unhuman in ways beyond normal definitions of inhumane. Some concentration camp "employees" felt almost as much stress as the inmates.
When employers have nothing to motivate them to convince others that they are treating their people well, they often won't, especially when there is an unlimited pool of others who feel they have little choice other than to go ahead and suffer abuse in their attempts to put food on their children's plates.
It's an often ugly system full of victims, one that I would hesitate to defend wholesale without specific detail, especially if I am not personally subjected to it the way some are.
Just sayin'. Maybe it's true. Maybe it isn't. But it is one way of looking at the problem, from what I've read. And few believe that there is no problem, I don't think.

Similarly, there are folks (probably a helluva lot more that your above Dachau employees) who believe "The World Owes Me A Living" and think that the most benign request ("Pardon me, do you think you could come to work on time? Occasionally, anyway?") is a violation of their God-given right to sit on their DA all day and expect to draw a MF paycheck.
But what do I know? I'm just the Sludge at the bottom of the sink trap.

I fully agree that both situations exist out there, and often in combination. But I hesitate to assume which situation exists in any specific instance without the benefit of personal direct observation.
But hey. Just me. And some of my best friends are sludge.
